Okay...so I am standing in my back yard throwing the ball to the dog
and playing with my grandbaby...I hear this giant crash.
I look up and there is a brand new Chevy pickup going through my front yard at about 60 mph (in a 30 zone) dragging a stop sign...oops there goes my neighbors tree...I yell for my daughter to come take the baby in and call 911 and then run over there to where the truck landed in my neighbors yard--taking ONE full grown tree with her and landing head on in the middle of another huge one (fully expecting to see her in my neighbors living room.
Airbags had deployed, back window fully blown out...but the lady was conscious. Just wow.
Had never seen anything like it from a front row seat.

2. I am not sure
I had a front row seat and she never hit the brakes.
I was the first one there and she was dazed, but then she came around. Gave me her husband's cell phone number.
Seems to be okay...but she could also be shocky too.
(I keep running to the window to watch the progress).

23. It was amazing
If she had hit the curve 20 feet closer my house would have been hit.
If she hit the curve 10 feet closer she would have taken out the power pole. I was out in the backyard with my granddaughter.
The power lines would have been all around us.
Gonna have to thank God for small favors here.
My neighbor wasn't home. If she didn't hit the trees, she would have been in his living room where his elderly mother was.
He is also thanking God for small favors.

7. Wow, I am impressed with that airbag --
I hope she recovers fully. I wonder whether her brakes failed or if there was some reason why she was unable to hit the brakes. Going 60 mph and a 30 mph zone sounds either like she was reckless (drunk/stoned) or like somehow the accelerator got locked in the 'down position' -

Hope she is okay...

14. Maybe She Just Freaked Out
Maybe she hopped the curb, deploying the airbags...and that scared her, and, instead of hitting the brakes, she hit the gas, instead!

It's awful damn scary when the airbags deploy, in case you didn't know. It can shock the hell out of you.

Also, I can say from personal experience, there is no worse feeling in the world than hitting a pedestrian. I know, I've done it (not my fault, but still...)

OK, folks, seriously...not my fault, I didn't even get ticketed out of it...the kid freaking ran right out in front of me and I had no chance to stop. I had been going the speed limit, and left 25 feet of rubber as evidence I tried like hell to avoid hitting him, but, in the end, I hit him anyway. It was a 13 or 14 year old kid I hit, not really sure, since the kid apparently couldn't speak a lick of English, and my Spanish is minimal at best!

24. Was the kid okay? Were you able to find out?
That is horrible - sorry it happened to you. I worry about kids and dogs and cats running out into the street in my neighborhood. :(

25. Oh, Yeah, The Kid Was Okay
I ended up using my car to block a part of the road, to make sure he didn't get hit AGAIN, and then ran out to check on him. A witness also stopped. She was able to speak Spanish far better than me. We had all we could do to convince the kid to stay there and wait for the ambulance to come check him out. They did, he was okay, and he walked from the scene.

apparently, according to the witness, he was afraid and wanted to get home by a specific time, he was afraid his momma would whoop him if he didn't get home.

I mean, here I just whaled the kid with my car, and he's worried about a momma-whooping?? Holy moly, I wouldn't want his momma!!

Anyway, the cops came by and one of the cops went with him to his house, and an accident report and everything got filed...but I was never charged with any wrongdoing, no ticket, nothing, but they did assign me 50 percent fault for the accident. Nothing ever came out of it, though, because the kid apparently never went to the hospital, nothing ever showed up on my car insurance, no claims, no nothing.

So I assume he was okay. I never heard another word about it.

But I felt like shit for about three weeks after it. Truly, it is a horrible feeling, to hit a pedestrian!

8. Do you live on a curve?
There's a house a few blocks from mine that's been hit three times because it's on a curve. The owners finally got sick of it and relandscaped with concrete embedded steel poles hiding in their bushes. It will be interesting to see what happens the next time someone misses it.

I do agree about the violence of the crash though. I was waiting to walk across a crosswalk once when someone ran a stoplight and hit another turning car head on. It's one thing to see a wrecked car after the fact, but you gain an entirely different viewpoint on car wrecks when you see them as an upclose bystander.

Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 05:40 PM by 0rganism
Reminds me of when my wife and I were looking for a house to buy, and we were checking out this one place that was pretty nice, except it was on a busy 4-lane street. On our way out the door, this car overruns the curb right next to us and takes out the corner stop sign for our nearest side-street. We took that as an omen and looked elsewhere...

20. Low blood sugar can hit diabetics almost without warning
I have a 50-something friend who's been diabetic for decades. She follows her diet, uses insulin, etc. Over the last few years, she's had several episodes where she just blacks out. A few times it's been while she was driving. She also experiences the low blood sugar drop, even when eating.

Doctors can't figure it out. She's pretty much stopped driving because she's so afraid she'll hurt someone. It's really sad.

12. I know what you mean about a front row seat
You feel like you are watching a movie when you actually see an accident with your own eyes.

A few years ago I saw a car in front of me get thrown into the air and flip about 4-5 times before it came down on it's roof. This was in fast-moving, bumper to bumper, 5-lane traffic in Los Angeles.

I had to stop to gather my own composure. Fortunately the driver in that car was OK, too.

19. I Saw One, Once, Too
I was in Louisville, Kentucky, on Interstate 64.

We saw a tow truck about a mile ahead, on the left shoulder, fixing to hook up a disabled vehicle.

for the moment, the two truck was behind the disabled vehicle, and talking to the owner...appaerently trying to understand what had happened, was a tow needed, etc...

Well, this little dodge Colt is in the left lane, doing about 70...We are in the center lane.

The Colt veers onto the shoulder. Me and my friend (who was driving) are watching this unfold...

We both look at each other..."Is he gonna...???" WHAM!!! the colt rams into the tow truck at 70 miles an hour...never had slowed, never hit the brakes, nothing.

The people on the shoulder ducked...don't know how it turned out for them, because me and my buddy, we kept driving.

There was nowhere we could have pulled over to offer assistance, safely. All we could do was use my cellphone to call 911, which I did. But it was sickening to watch, because in the split second before the crash, when you KNEW it was gonna happen...time just seemed to slow down...eesh!!

15. It's weird when you see it in real life
When I first moved into my house, a pick-up, hauling some kind of trailer bed, missed the death curve, out front of my house, and kept going straight into the neighbor's yard. I was sitting on my porch, taking in the nature, over a spot of chai, and then it all happend -- loud crashing, car slams into the ditch, out of the ditch, and hits the car in their driveway. There apparently had once been a tree there, but it was taken out, some time ago. Sucks to be those neighbors.

16. That happened to me!!!
I swear it did, just a few months ago. Except I was sitting in the house and WHAM!! Turns out a bee had gotten into somebody's little truck and she lost control. Somehow she hit the stop sign on the corner of the neighbor who is kitty-corner from me, then went through her yard. My neighbor was in his drive across the street, so she swerved to miss him, took out the neighbors shrubberies and careened across the street into my son's car!!

I hate when that happens, don't you? :)

(Weird, very weird, I know the feeling)

Maybe she confused the gas and brake pedal.

Cheers!

18. I saw 2 accidents in a front row seat last year
A person in a car in front of us in traffic on the road.. just ran off the road into a church's yard and hit a tree head on,just like that. I called 911,
The other was a car I saw that appeared to have ran off the road, it was still on the road it had just stopped at a weird angle like half on the shoulder.. I saw it at around 3 am. As I called 911 on my cell my partner turned our car around So I could tell them nearest road as I reported it to the dispatcher.. As I pulled by the car the cops had just arrived on the scene and they had opened the car door on the drivers side,As we passed I saw it was a blonde haired woman slumped forward and she had been shot in the back of her head, brain bits were everywhere, the dash..it was gross..and sad.Looked like a homicide to me but who knows could have been a suicide too I guess. I wonder if people just get suicidal and kill themselves this way or something..(talking about the person who hit the tree)

22. ALrighty
Update: Back now. Had to give statement to police and do my duty as a nosey neighbor.
Remarkable that TXDOT already replaced the stop sign. She levelled the first tree and completely uprooted it.
The truck was wrapped around the second tree--it broke a wench taking it off.
Tree is about a 400 year old oak. Tree doctor coming tomorrow. They doubt it can be saved.
There is a hole through the bottom of it that you can stick your arm through.
My neighbor is the President of one of the local banks--had a gorgeous yard. It is destroyed.
The lady refused to go to the hospital and her family took her home. She was limping but seemed okay.
I saw the accident after the point of the first impact when she hit the stop sign.
I live on a curve with a big hill off the road.My front yard is about 1/2 acre.
My neighbors yard is the same size.
She never hit the brakes. I know that and her speed increased after the first impact as she came down the hill.
APPARENTLY from another witness, she stopped at the side of the road about 100 yards back. He stated she started going again and spun her tires out and accelerated around the curve. He stated she never hit the brake lights. His take was that she did this on purpose.
I have no idea. I'm just glad nobody was injured.
