Great C-Span this morning... Turn it on!
Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 07:49 AM by Roxy66
They are asking "What is a Liberal"?

This should be good!!!

They were asking people to call in and answer..."What is a Conservative"? The answers were very civil from the Democrats...Lets see how nasty the Repugs can get answering what a Liberal is.

Rep. Davis Obey on now.....

Did you hear him ask what was wrong with body piecing and latte?

Did I miss something?

10. "Unpatriotic" and "anti-family" should be qualified.
They should be asked why they think that Liberals are unpatriotic or anti-family. They'll probably reply that Liberals are unpatrotic because they don't go marching into every war like right-wing stupids do; and they'll probably say that they're anti-family because they're pro gay and pro choice.

In the end, I've won out on discussions with a right-winger on the gay issue, because his family members are gay; and I've won out on the pro-choice issue when he, himself concluded that the problem in America is that there are too many people here, for the available resources. My question to him, so does it make a lot of sense to be against a women's right to choose whether she wants to opt for an abortion? He said, well no.

28. If you discuss the issues with people rationally
As you did many will acknowledge that you are right. And making them qualify their statements is effective. I always pin them down on the welfare thing. I ask them if they know how much is spent on social programs for the poor compared to defense and if they think it's better to spend their tax dollars on $400 hammers to enrich war profiteers than to spend money to help poor kids eat.

I also show them how it's race-baiting. I ask them to picture the stereotypical "Lazy Welfare Queen" and then ask them what image pops into their head. What ethnicity is she? I then point out that the majority of welfare recipients are Caucasian. And then I ask them if they think the image that popped into their head is an accident. I'm very careful to stress that thinking of African-Americans in conjunction with things like welfare and crime doesn't make them a racist, nor does it mean that it's what motivates them to vote a certain way, but that these issues have been used by the Right to divide and alienate people.

11. If you want to know what a liberal is just ask John Kennedy
Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 07:38 AM by ET Awful
He laid it out best decades ago.

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

14. Geez!
The last caller I am hearing is really living up to the freeper stereotype. We are all latte drinking people who would fly over the heartland without seeing it and we all body pierce ourselves? The clincher: the guy is a student and 21 years old ~ whose daddy is probably paying for his education and has not worked a day in his life ~ but he HAS done his chores and mowed the lawn tho, lol. Oooo! He knows a lot about what a liberal is, doesn't he?

And the next freeper is more concerned about abortion and has not said one word about the poverty in this country. He says we do not have morals and then obviously cares more about fetuses in the womb than people outside of the womb.

- JOHN F. KENNEDY

JFK offered a perfect explanation of a liberal. We are
a diverse group of Americans. I am a Christian and a
liberal and I am sickened by how the supposed
"Christian Right" defines a liberal. Jesus was the
example I used to become a liberal. What example are
they following? Judge not lest ye be judged.
