Three students face expulsion over protest

<snip>

Mark Bennett says he was among those passing out the ‘Drive Out Bush Regime’ flyers and spreading the word about a protest gathering. But then campus police showed up.

....

Hampton University’s code of conduct says peaceful, non-violent demonstrations are allowed on campus as long as permission has been given. Each student much sign it.

...

"If they're going to practice their freedom of speech, they have to have permission.”

...

Bennett explained why he’s part of the effort.

"They can send you to Iraq in a quick second. But, they can't send you to New Orleans when they needed it, so it's like his views are messed up."

There will be a hearing to decide any discipline for the students accused of violating the university’s code of conduct.

"If they're going to practice their freedom of speech, they have to have permission.”

That line sounds like it's from a Monty Python skit.

I'm pretty sure there's a permission slip floating around out there somewhere. What's it called again? Oh, yeah: The United States Constitution.

4. You know, ...Permission???
They can say all people of color are now slaves... that doesn't make it so....We have a goddamn Constitution.

Students need to be aware of what they're signing onto, before they willingly sign away their rights....

that contract is an illegal contract... and the school needs to be taken to task.

How can Ideas be freely discussed in class with rules like that?

How many other schools have such rules as a prerequisite for incoming students?

9. Agreed!! All a Dem has to do for a campaign speech is
read the Bill of Rights. If they want to hang ten of something in public schools and buildings, how about the BoR?

BTW, your avatar, isn't that the guy on the tailgate of that truck?

10. Let's do this--how do we get DUers on board to
push dems to have a campaign platform including posting BoRs in all classrooms???

sorry, but I don't get what you meant about the guy on the tailgate? I'm a little dense today...

13. So now passing out flyers is the same as a "demonstration"?
Campus cops are often not the brightest bulbs on the law enforcement board.

15. It's a private/independent wingnut school. I hope it doesn't take
any federal or state funds. (Oh, and I love the Emancipation Oak on its home page.)
