Here's the thread where Dave mistakenly accuses Tupelo, Miss., school administrators methodically purging all Christmas carols of any religious content... He was dead wrong and now admits it....

1. To be utterly cynical

If:

The Utility of telling the lie - (the probability of getting caught x the Censure for telling the lie) > 0

or put more briefly:
U - (PxC) > 0

then it is worthwhile telling the lie.

An example:
If the value for the Utility is 1, and the value for the Censure is 2 (to wipe out the Utility and earn Censure for telling the lie), but the chance of getting caught is only 25% then:

1 - (25/100 x 2) = + 0.5
i.e. the lie is worth telling

(Full legin made it up alert with sirens going too) :evilgrin:
