Now tell me, what is the story you all have seen on CNN and MSNBC all day? How many times have we all seen the Black Friday slug fests today?
So I decided to turn to Faux to see if they had a different take on Black Friday. Lo and behold, I found out that even though Americans, when polled, think the economy is weak, it is STRONG! And the proof? MILLIONS awoke before dawn today to shop, while others "lounged at home snapping up internet discounts with nary a fight over a shopping cart or a parking place".(Yes, that is a direct quote.)
Lots of happy shopping scenes, sounds of money and cash registers.
Our economy is up 6% from last year! Economists describe it as "stubbornly resilient". Retailers expect $30 billion in sales this weekend alone!
Key factor: cheaper gas. Price is down 78 cents since Labor Day. The Dow is up nearly 500 since Halloween.
We have more disposable income and seem happy to pump into the economy. :) (Oh happy day)
We love shopping!!
Retailers were concerned after the hurricane (we had the hurricane blues) but inflation and unemployment are at historic lows. Predictions are for lower interest rates next year! Productivity has continued to rise.
And we are NOT going to plunge ourselves deeper into credit card debt! Why you ask? Because credit cards are NOT the most popular means of payment. Debit cards are #1 and cash is #2. We are budgeting and keeping an eye out for those discounts. We are PLANNNING AHEAD (that is what the cute little blond lady says). This of course means we will not be paying off credit cards in January so we will have $$ to spend! And retailers are happy because parking lots in malls will not be deserted in Jan, Feb and March.
But then we were reminded that even though we have a $12 trillion economy, GM has announced it will shed 30,000 mfg jobs and unemployment claims this week were higher than expected. There are also troubles in the airline industry and corporate pensions. But never fear - predictions are for a solid if not spectacular economic growth next year. Why, you wonder? Well, we are going to have one of the best holiday shopping seasons in recent memory!!
What? Shoppers assaulting each other? Ambulances rushed to WalMart? Not on Faux!! Only happy shopping stories.
Next up - Iran is building a nuclear weapon.
That's when I turned the channel. All that happy news was exhausting me.
