Legalization of Plan B: help get Dems elected?
60 Minutes just tackled this tonite. Can Dems add this to the platform? Is anyone here outraged enough to demand our side take action?

4. Morning after pill.
Usually prescribed in the case of a rape, broken condom, or just stupidly having unprotected sex.

It's pretty much the same thing as birth-control pills in a higher dosage and they prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

7. this is infuriating,,,,,
i wish there was a law prohibiting men from opening their big fat mouths on the matter of abortion and contraception (unless they're pro-choice).

8. I think it would be a good idea for women to have Plan B on hand....
....just in case. The package costs about 20 bucks at retail and lasts for 2 years. I'd RATHER they be able to head down to any pharmacy and pick it up off the shelf without even a prescription, but the idiot religious right just can't keep their noses out of people's bedrooms and women's uteruses.

15. unless they're pro-choice...?
i am, but still- that's why we have a first amendment...I'm sure that there are people on the pro-life(i will NOT play the "anti-choice" game) side of the equation who feel just as strongly that only men on their side should be able to voice their concerns.

everyone is entitled to an opinion.

19. It's no game--for women.
This issue means life or death for women. The "pro-life" side of the issue works very hard to support death for women; hence, the "pro-life" label is a presumptuous lie. If you wish to speak truth (and who doesn't?), you should call them what they are: anti-choice or pro-women's-death. The first rolls so much easier off the tongue, doesn't it?

21. each side of the issue gets to name itself, not the other way around
our side is "pro-choice", their side is "pro-life".

if opponents gave out the names to each other, they'd be "anti-choice" and we'd be "pro-death"(or "anti-life").

semantic games are stupid and serve no purpose, except to illicit this kind of response from people: :eyes:

6. the pill you take within 72 hours
to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus and then being prego. It's over-the-counter status was blocked by fundamentalist doctors on the FDA science board. We suspect the White House told them to do it. All the e-mails were destroyed.

12. I think we need to keep that discussion centered onthe fact that
the FDA decided to ignore their science committee's recommendation, and take an emotional approach when the science didn't back them up.

That approach could be applied to other issues regarding medications, food products, makeup, etc, couldn't it? For example, what if the FDA decided to take cool whip or other fattening, preservative-laden, dye-laden foods off the market?

13. They said the decision not to make it an over-the-counter drug
was made BEFORE the committee even met. This is coming straight from King George and his holier-than-thou, proof-intelligent-design-doesn't-exist cronies. This is one of the dumbest decisions to date. Don't allow little Susie to buy the damn pill and avoid pregnancy so she can fess up to mom at 16 weeks and go through the horror of abortion. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

17. RU 486 actually causes an early pregnancy to abort,
ie: an already implanted embryo during the 1st 6 weeks of development. Plan B acts to prevent a pregnancy from happening, either by preventing ovulation, or by preventing a fertilized egg from ever implanting in the womb. It is generally only effective if taken within 72 hours, which is well before there would be any actual pregnancy.

I think alot of people get confused over the difference, but they are very different.

24. RU 486 causes an abortion; Plan B PREVENTS abortions, says Dr. Susan Wood
Dr. Wood is the former head of the FDA's Women's Health office, who quit over the scientific research being ignored by the FDA in stalling a decision on making Plan B available over the counter. Now she's speaking out whenever she can (and she's a very convincing speaker! Yea!)

"... Wood says this is not an abortion pill. “There is an abortion pill called RU-486, and this is not it,” she says. “An abortion pill interrupts an established pregnancy. This product is contraception. It does not interrupt an established pregnancy.”

She says even if you took it and were already pregnant, it would not end the pregnancy. “The only connection this product has with abortion is that it can prevent them by preventing an unintended pregnancy,” says Wood. ..."

Putting Plan B on the platform should be a no-brainer. Plan B actually prevents abortions!
