Stripes letter: War based on a lie
War based on a lie

Weapons of mass destruction? I’m still looking for them, and if you find any give me a call so we can justify our presence in Iraq. We started the war based on a lie, and we’ll finish it based on a lie. I say this because I am currently serving with a logistics headquarters in the Anbar province, between the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi. I am not fooled by the constant fabrication of “democracy” and “freedom” touted by our leadership at home and overseas.

This deception is furthered by our armed forces’ belief that we can just enter ancient Mesopotamia and tell the locals about the benefits of a legislative assembly. While our European ancestors were hanging from trees, these ancient people were writing algebra and solving quadratic equations. Now we feel compelled to strong-arm them into accepting the spoils of capitalism and “laissez-faire” society. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy watching Britney Spears on MTV and driving to McDonald’s, but do you honestly believe that Sunnis, Shias and Kurds want our Western ideas of entertainment and freedom imposed on them? Think again.

I’m not being negative, I’m being realistic. The reality in Iraq is that the United States created a nightmare situation where one didn’t exist. Yes, Saddam Hussein was an evil man who lied, cheated and pillaged his own nation. But how was he different from dictators in Africa who commit massive crimes again humanity with little repercussion and sometimes support from the West? The bottom line up front (BLUF to use a military acronym) is that Saddam was different because we used him as an excuse to go to war to make Americans “feel good” about the “War on Terrorism.” The BLUF is that our ultimate goal in 2003 was the security of Israel and the lucrative oil fields in northern and southern Iraq.

Weapons of mass destruction? Call me when you find them. In the meantime, “bring ’em on” so we can get our “mission accomplished” and get out of this mess.

Capt. Jeff Pirozzi
Camp Taqaddum, Iraq

15. Soldiers who rebel are the key to getting out of Iraq. just as it was...
key to getting out of Vietnam. It wasn't Congress (give me a break... Congress got us into Vietnam...)

While Congress bickers over various "exit plans" that for the most part mirror bushs (I would say Murtha's is the most unique, but i don't want troops to redeploy "over the horizon" unless he means Kansas City) soldiers telling it like it is, and then organizing resistance based on their unique view of this disaster are what's needed. We will never leave Iraq unless there is massive refusal in the ranks. Because we are going to lose in Iraq, and the Republicans... and most Democrats will not accept that until it is just too impossible to press on. soldiers in the trenches... or who refuse to go into the trenches, will make it so.

Bush has killed more Iraqis than Saddam ever did, but the real winner in the dead Iraqis contest is Bill Clinton. Saddam Hussein ran a secular nation that once had one of the highest standards of living in the ME. Bush, Clinton, and Bush have destroyed Iraq, and they haven't rebuilt it. I'll say it clearly and unambiguously-- Iraq was FAR better off with Saddam Hussein in power than it is under the American occupation.

Not with our low army reenlistment numbers.

No, he's needed on the front, just like every other "boot" the army/reserve/guard has to offer.

To that soldier, things couldn't get worse, not even prison.

36. I don't suspect they would either - though making examples
out of someone isn't exactly that far fetched for the military.

Officers aren't as accepting of negative comments either - so an officer making such comments is brave. Especially considering the work place "politics" of being an officer.

I know Article 88 is being well publicized within the military community. AFN covers it several times a day. I always snicker during the "infomercials" - you just know comments are on the rise for them to be airing this particular "informative" 60 seconds spot constantly. AFN does a "FYI" kind of thing which covers the UCMJ, the Geneva Convention, and the Law of Land Warfare - as well as a host of other subjects.

As an aside, Article 88 does not apply to enlisted.

Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 01:39 PM by lebkuchen
are being felt.

It's been two years since publication. Makes one "wonder" why Stripes hasn't followed up on that survey. Afraid of what they're going to find? Imagine the latest stats being published in the NYT and carried far and wide.

The Bushies are barely keeping a lid on out and out military contempt for this administration. Any letters to Stripes at this point are an exercise in "cow tipping" only easier, now that Bush is the "cow."

downgraded with the base closings - recently conducted a survey on "morale"

Let's just say - it wasn't pretty. They want to redo in a few months to "review" and "compare" the results. lolol

Those base closing are being handled with the same inept game plan as the Iraq invasion. It's a complete joke. Too bad so many lives are dependent on the whimsy of an idiot in office.

Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 02:08 PM by lebkuchen
an indication of how many are separating from the military.

It's a problem, too, because the quickened pace of officer promotions leads to a lack of leadership training that comes with experience, and that has affected morale. There have been several letters to Stripes written by the enlisted ranks complaining about this.

I look forward to Congressmembers, especially those with military experience, to step forward, as Rep. Murtha has, and truly support our military community. Read the following concerns and then lend a hand to do something about them. It took courage to write these letters. Show some courage in return and take action.

38. Thank you so much for those links - I think that post
deserves a thread all it's own.

It helps dispel that notion that the military marches lock-step behind Bush.

42. I keep updating it, and there are sure to be more letters on the way
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 02:09 PM by lebkuchen
I last posted the list, far and wide, after the staged communications stunt between Bush and a handful of military PR people. Shortly after, Rep. Murtha made his comments.

Who knows how many Congressmembers read Stripes letters on a daily basis, but when seen in bulk, these letters are unprecedented for this paper. The Stripes Morale Survey indicated so much military discontent a full two years ago, no one in Congress should be surprised at the current low reenlistment rates and plethora of Bush-bashing letters to Stripes.
