This is what we need.

The Far Right/GOP presents so much of a threat to the United States and the world itself with it's destructive policies, it's opposition to the poor/middle class, and religious fanaticism.

What I am proposing is a UN Occupation of the United States, Peacekeepers, basically the whole 9 yards.

Winning Elections = Not enough

We need to permanently cripple those Crypto-Fascists we call the Far Right.

Bring the UN in, kick the RW'ers out.

1. Can't go along with this one
Well, I am comforted that this has no chance of happening, but I can't think this would be a good idea even if it were possible.

American's wouldn't stand for it, there would be violence. And in the crucible of that violence, what would emerge? It's impossible to say.

7. wouldn't that make us into "insurgents"?
Although I would gladly defend America (I honestly do love it here, which is why I want to defend it against the NeoCons also), I think maybe we could at least have some election oversight to make sure no one is cheating. And maybe some weapons inspectors too - I hear we have WMD's and have used them.

2. Not so fast. US Progressives have not yet begun to fight.
What was the straw that broke your camel's back, btw?

4. I've actually been advocating this for a while
But, I'm starting to catch on to why the RW'ers hate the UN so much.

The Neo-Cons hate the UN

The Conspiracy Theorists hate the UN

The 'christian' Right hates the UN

There is a reason why.

Most of the RW'ers are concerned about Domestic Issues. Especially the issue of Abortion. Other than that they seem to have a fervent hatred for the UN.

Why?

I think it can stop them.

Maybe I'm advocating this because I don't like RW'ers very much and I'm very happy when I see something the RW'ers hate come to pass.

But, I also think that a UN Occupation would help protect America and the World from RW'ers.

Progressives are out and fighting, for that I am glad. But, at the same time I ask myself "Is it enough?"

5. You do realise, of course...
...that there is no such thing as a standing UN army. Those soldiers come from somewhere. Who would you chose to be occupied by?

3. Never!
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 12:19 PM by tx_dem41
Never will I give up the soverignty that our forefathers (and fathers and mothers) fought for. It is OUR responsibility to remedy perceived societal and governmental ills. And, I believe that many of us are taking up that challenge.

The kind of thinking in the OP is not only sadly defeatist and melodramatic, but its the direct result of overexposure to an echo chamber.

Being in our own community for support is fine, but it must (IMO) be accompanied by exposure to opinions across the spectrum, as well as dispassionate reporting from knowledgeable observers. Only then, can we rationally analyse our situation and wisely choose our future course.

6. One other thing...why do you want to give China, as a Permanent
Member of the UN Security Council, total control of the U.S. via their veto power?

8. Just a tad premature.
We don't have fundie militias shelling San Francisco. Not yet. Peacekeepers are not called for.

OTOH, I wouldn't mind some UN monitoring of our elections. Somebody needs to, and Jimmy Carter's group has said that the US doesn't meet the standards they require for them to do so.
