Religious Group pays reporters to put Bible verse in secular publications
I heard this story on NPR over the Thanksgiving Holiday and it sickened me. There is no level at which these religiofascist fundamentalists won't stoop to.

Here is the original audio of the NPR story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5026761

The Amy Foundation offers thousands of dollars in cash prizes for journalists who put Bible verses and communicate "biblical truth" in stories for secular publications.

Here is their website: http://www.amyfound.org/

3. Any reporter who is paid to put ANYTHING into a story
needs to be expelled from the profession.

It's too bad we can't sue these men who succumb to bribery for journalistic malpractice.

11. Will the Amy Foundation be posting a list of its prize winners?
It would be awesome to use this in letters to editors and ombudsmen about the open lack of integrity displayed by said recipients.

14. Doesn't look that way
their website is pretty non-informational in terms of who is awarded what. I would guess that is deliberate.

4. Shows how worthless bible verses are on their own, without "cash prizes"
There are maybe a dozen pages of common sense in the bible, along with a sampling of concepts from earlier civilizations worth preserving, and a few lines of decent poetry. The rest can be consigned to the archive cellars to gather dust, and the world will get along just fine.

5. Jesus F Christ!
Can we just pack them off and ship them to a country like Iran to give them a taste of the politics and religion mix?

6. Any reporter who agrees to do this should be fired. Most newspapers
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 02:49 PM by yellowcanine
and magazines would have an ethics rule which would bar this. A news story is supposed to be a news story. If a biblical reference is not appropriate for that particular story it should not be there. Reporters are not allowed to flack commercial products in a news story so why should they be allowed to do this? Highly unethical.

13. I can't get the audio to work but
I seem to remember that one of the people interviewed in the story said she hadn't told her bosses (about the Amy Foundation bribe) at the newspaper she worked for, and didn't have to. I think they'd be interested to know, don't you? I wish I could find a transcript of the whole story.

7. I wonder if they will pay me....
To post bible scripture on forums? :silly:

"Jesus wept"

I wonder if they pay by the verse, by the word or by the letter?
They can make those checks out to Psychodad!

12. "It is easier for a camel
to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24, quoting Jesus).

OK, I've done my part, Amy. I'll pass on my cash reward though; please send the money to Oxfam so that they can feed the hungry, as Jesus commanded.
