Poll question: Are you an observer or an activist?
I am an observer. I observe and listen (and sometimes whine.)

But I don't do. That's also why I'm single. :7

2. Please define precisely what you mean.
I'm not sure I know how to respond. Mostly I observe and take in information. On the other hand, I am VERY outspoken and VERY busy seeding information to busy people who would not otherwise receive the kind of political perspective I provide. Is that 'activism' to you? It is to me. I also participate in demonstrations, write letters, that sort of thing. Does that count? Or does one have to engage in direct civil disobedience to be an 'activist'?

5. Define 'civil disobedience'.
That is an 'activist'. At least in my muddled definition, and for once I will admit I could have thought out the definitions more clearly. O8)

16. I take 'civil disobedience' to mean:
An intentional breaking of the law in a peaceful (non violent) manor such as a sit-in or protest without permit.

Personally, I've never been arrested. EVER! However, I have participated in 'civil disobedience' on a few occasions since 1966. The last was a candle light vigil in support of Cindy Sheehan. It was a peaceful assembly of several hundred people on an urban sidewalk without permit.

13. I can relate to this question.
I work at a job where *all* my colleagues profess to be progressive. The Bush administration appointed people to the National Labor Board who overturned our right to unionize. We are currently striking. In my department, all of the self-identified progressives have suddenly changed their mind about where they stand politically in order to co-incide with their decision to scab. Suddenly, every one is anti-labor and sympathetic to the big corporation we work for so that they can say that they made the decision to scab 'in good conscience'.

Ugh. And I listened to all of these people gripe for the past year about how terrible Bush was and all the things that they were going to do to 'stand up' to the Republicans. Turns out, when the fight landed on their lap, they caved and (most disturbing of all) many changed their politics.

Funny, in the past I might have chosen "observer" because, although I went to marches occasionally and voted and signed petitions, etc., most of what I did was stay aware and try to raise awareness in other people. But I'm glad that when the fight fell in my lap, I chose to be active.

I'm just a progressive who does what is required at the moment; there is a time for observation and a time for action. This isn't a major league sports event; this is our life, our culture, and our history.
