Flight diverted after passenger smokes, urinates in aisle

CHARLOTTE (AP) — A United Airlines flight was diverted to Charlotte after a passenger lit a cigarette, argued with a flight attendant, then urinated in the plane's aisle, the airline said.

Flight 1502 had 117 passengers aboard when it was diverted from its direct route from Orlando, to Washington. Friday night, United Airlines spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said. The plane landed in Charlotte at 8:15 p.m. and was on the ground for about 20 minutes before completing the flight to Dulles International Airport, the airline's website said.

(snip)

Flight attendants noticed that the man appeared drunk not long after the plane left Orlando, Urbanski said. He later lit a cigarette and began to argue with a flight attendant who asked him to put it out, she said.

He obeyed, but when the flight attendant walked away, he stood up and urinated, Urbanski said.

11. "Man appeared drunk not long after the plane left Orlando."
Why was he allowed to board? I hope the FAA slaps a hefty fine on United for this.

A few years ago (pre-9/11) US Airways was fined $100,000 for allowing a drunk to board a B-757 for a red-eye flight from Las Vegas to Charlotte. The drunk, denied alcohol (after finishing off the bottle he sneaked on-board), pulled a long-blade knife (how did he get through security with that?) and threatened a flight attendant. He then proceeded to cut up two rows of coach seats (12 seats) before the captain made an unscheduled landing in Memphis.

It ended up that the US Airways gate agents were well aware that this guy was swigging out of his own bottle at a slot machine in the boarding area. They did not stop him from boarding, nor did they inform any of the crew about the guy's condition or about the fact that he had a bottle of booze in his carry-on bag. The $100,000 fine was, IMHO, light in view of some other outcomes that pop into my mind.

19. This is why I haven't had a drink in years.
These thing seem so funny while you're in a stupor (and young) - not so funny afterward.

At least I never got my name in the paper or a ride in one of those special cars without inside locks.
