SANTA CRUZ — UC Santa Cruz will host a special forum Oct. 25 on the controversy surrounding electronic voting systems.

Many computer scientists argue that results from the new systems are unverifiable and vulnerable to tampering, and some local residents agree. Yet some election officials seem unconcerned. Part of the appeal of these systems is that they can enable blind and disabled people to vote secretly.

Speakers at the forum will include:

David Dill, professor of computer science, Stanford University

Warren Slocum, Santa Mateo County chief elections officer

Assemblyman Joe Simitian, 21st District

Alan Dechert, Open Voting Consortium

The League of Women Voters also has been invited.

The free public forum will run from 12:30 to 5 p.m. in the Baskin Engineering Building, Room 152, on campus.

KICK!

If the LWV attends, they should be right upfront that national does not represent the position of many League members.

The League took that position from the top down- and that's not how the League works.

Many members are very upset.

I would suggest getting Barbara Simpson (?) of the ACM, a knowledgable computer person and League member.

The League can only quote one person that they based that decision on, and it's questionable if they got it right, or took 10 year old information.

.....You can be SURE I'll raise that subject and throw in a line about the AAPD as well! We'll be bringing at least a two camera setup to tape this and a separate mix board and sound system to be certain there's NO STATIC this time! :evilgrin:
I'll also bring a pair of FM wireless mikes for any audience questions.
Between this meeting and Diebold / Jim March in Sacramento on the 28th it's going to be one hell of a week! :)
