When Cindy Sheehan was in Crawford in August, among the many letters to the editor, pro and con, a few critiqued the way she looked.
One writer hee-hawed that she looked like a man. Another said, for God's sake, woman, get thee to a hairdresser. Thoughtful.
We all see what we want of this wind-swept, full-time war protester. My problem with judging Sheehan by her hair is that I imagine what my hair would be like if I were in her shoes.
If my son went to war presuming he was defending us, “defending our freedom,” as commonly portrayed, and instead he'd been ordered into a elective, nation-building experience by leaders with no prior experience, I might be a full-time protester. The sun by now would have put 10 extra years on my face. My split ends would have split ends.
