Science faces 'dangerous times'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4482174.stm

Fundamentalism is hampering global efforts to tackle climate change, according to Britain's top scientist.

In his final speech as president of the Royal Society, Lord May of Oxford is to warn that core scientific values are "under serious threat from resurgent fundamentalism, West and East".

Scientists must speak out against the climate change "denial lobby", he says.

Lord May completes his five-year term as president of the UK's academy of science on Wednesday.

Who'd ever think we would be in the same times as Galileo where when Pat Robertson speaks Science stops!!!

Dark Ages!!!

1. Agreed
The dang cons prohibit logical/scientific thought because that would possibly make people wise enough to see how asinine the religions really are.

They stop scientific research on absolutely baseless grounds (A book told me so is not a good answer; try again, will you?). The fact that people believe this nonsense scares me.

2. I'm frustrated beyond imagine over these idiots!
 I'm finishing up my PhD in oceanography and finding that all the science funding is drying up. We're under attack by corporate spinmeisters who try to muddy science that might cost them some bucks in the short run but will make everyone wealthier in the long run. We're under attack by idiots that think "Intelligent Design" is a scientific theory. The short sighted idiots don't realize that over the long run, preserving the environment now costs less. Taking measures to limit greenhouse gases now costs less in terms of human health in addition to actual implementation costs. If they are really prolife, how can they support loosened mercury standards? How can they not realize that basic research is what drives new industry? We're being attacked by a group of Neoluddites trying to throw the US into the dark ages while the rest of the world blows by us. Our scientific research has kept us ahead of the rest of the world for the last century. We've lost our edge in agriculture, skilled labor, unskilled labor, and manufacturing. Now the short sighted morons are trying to destroy the last advantage we have.

5. That wouldn't be very nice.
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 09:14 PM by A Simple Game
You know how much that would cost?

Just put them all on a deserted island, let them sort it out amongst themselves. That should take care of most of them.

on edit: I like the #2 pencil idea, silly, but I like it. I'm picturing myself doing it right now, and it feels good.
