WaPo columnist calls John Kerry "Benedict Arnold" in pro-Walmart column
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 10:16 PM by swag
What is this garbage, Washington Post? Given who has been on your payroll for decades, in the being of Bob Woodward, shouldn't you think twice about gratuitous name-calling, especially of the "treason"-name-calling variety?

I looked for some context to the quote trying to find Sebastian Mallaby's libel of Kerry less bizarre, but couldn't find any. So the Washington Post gladly ups the ante on the Smearboat game, even at this late date:

(via atrios)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/27/AR2005112700687.html

"Furman advised John "Benedict Arnold" Kerry in the 2004 campaign and has never received any payment from Wal-Mart; he is no corporate apologist."

Maybe opinions@washingtonpost.com would like to hear about this.

Froomkin might also: froomkin@washingtonpost.com

Certainly Deborah Howell deserves a note: ombusdman@washingtonpost.com

Washington Post, what's with your garbage lately?

1. They were referring to the fact that Kerry called corporations
which are not paying taxes Benedict Arnolds.

3. Not made clear in the column, which merely refers to
John "Benedict Arnold" Kerry.

5. It is a very poorly written column
which requires you to recall that fact, which may well not be on the tip of the typical reader's tongue. That said, I do think that is what he was getting at.

10. They do owe it
I hope they will give one. Upon reflection, this was as much poor editting as it was poor writing. Any decent editor should have known that such a loaded term should be defined.

6. The columnist did a poor job of clarifying it.

2. Can you explain to me who this Furman guy is and why Walmart
should pay him for advising Kerry? I don't get it. Why would kerry be called a Benedict Arnold? The op-ed columnist sounds like a nut case.
Explain and I would be happy to contact anyone and defend Kerry.

8. Never mind thanks to post #1 I got it. Actually, I think the term
BA, when used in this way, makes Kerry into a good guy who believe that big corporations should pay their fair share in taxes like the rest of us. So he is a Benedict Arnold (traitor) when it comes to large corporations getting away with not paying taxes they should pay.

11. I forgot about his reference, too.
It did seem to me to be a personal attack on Kerry and I was about to write an angry letter. It still should be clarified, however. They should refer to George as George "evildoer" Bush from now on. It makes about as much sense, language-wise, but in Bush's case is true, of course.

12. That is pretty badly written
I knew the reference - but that there are people here, who likely saw more of Kerry in 2004 than average, who don't know it means many will interpret it (or try to interpet it) as it reads. Then it's a gratuitous slam against Kerry.
