LA Daily News: Movie jobs may be a wrap
Movie jobs may be a wrap

By Gregory J. Wilcox, Staff Writer
LA Daily News

The powerful entertainment industry is experiencing rapid change that could send it reeling from labor unrest and job losses to other states and countries, according to a study to be released today.

The study, by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., said next year could bring a sharp drop in the rate of job creation as worries about strikes or other labor actions mount and union negotiations draw near.

The study notes that, with 249,000 jobs, the entertainment industry is the second-biggest employer in Los Angeles County, generating revenues of $28 billion last year.

Kyser's findings were embraced by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a proponent of creating incentives that make the city and state more competitive with other locales. For example, Villaraigosa has proposed eliminating fees for filming at all city facilities.

2. Maybe we have to have a list of jobs that will be around in the far
future - like 2008. Let's see - there are lots of political jobs. Cashiers. Teachers. Nurses. Doctors. * is trying to get rid of most lawyers. Lots of Walmarts going up. Computer jobs going. Car jobs going. Any other ideas for a future?
