Interesting post from a conservative at work
We have a "chat room" at my company where we can discuss politics. I recently posted there "Shame on Bush if he tries using pictures from the USS Lincoln in his election campaign."

A staunch conservative and Republican responded. "Shame on him if he even tries to get re-elected. And I'm a Republican who voted for him the first time."

I didn't try to correct the "re-elected" thing.

1. That's interesting.
I've talked to a conservative friend of mine, and he's just as disillusioned with Bush as the conservative who responded to your post. And I don't think it's at all isolated. I find it most interesting that there are Republicans who won't vote for Bush in 2004. Perhaps that's one reason why Bush is signing off on things like "Marriage Protection Week", to get the fundie base energized for 2004.

And I wish you had corrected that conservative about the "re-elected" thing. Since some people seem to stubbornly hold on to the belief that Bush was elected in 2000.

3. Another anecdote...
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 01:17 PM by Gman
I talked with a good friend this week that is staunch Republican. She informed me this week just how disgusted she is with Bush and said for the first time in her life she will vote Democrat in 04. This woman's biggest gripe was the entire Halliburton situation including no-bid contracts and Cheney still getting paid by and having options in Halliburton.

5. I'm curious why?
Is it because Bush has betrayed conservatism, or is it because the guy finally realized that Bush's policies aren't helping the little guy?

10. I think it's mainly because most of the GOP "base"
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 01:49 PM by Gman
is not a whole lot to the right of center. I'll add this to my post above, but what disgusted this woman most was the entire Halliburton situation. The GOP rank and file doesn't like corruption, favoritism, and lying anymore than we do. They recognize it when they see it and right now they don't like what they see.

14. they are embarrassed
I have an R friend, the ditto-head variety actually, and she is embarrassed to talk to me. She bought the they-will-throw-roses stuff about Iraq. We had a big disagreement at start of war.

Now she is embarrasseed she bought it. She is also disturbed about the cost of the thing. Funny, while we were bombing the crap out of the Iraqis, no problem, but to find out what it actually costs to do this, well! That's an issue worthy of concern!

Some are also blatantly talking about having been lied to in order to gain support for this war:

Great article, I recommend it to all who haven't seen it yet.

6. same here
My sister, dyed-in-the-wool repub, sent me the following email, and has threatened to start writing letters about the shrub's policies in her spare time. I think it's pretty telling:

While walking down the street one day a female head of state is tragically hit by a truck and dies. Her soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the lady.

"Well, I'd like to but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven," says the head of state.

"I'm sorry but we have our rules." And with that, St. Peter escorts her to the elevator and she goes down, down, down to Hell. The doors open and she finds herself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all her friends and other politicians who had worked with her, everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet her, hug her, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar. Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes.

They are having such a good time that, before she realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives her a big hug and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on Heaven here St. Peter is waiting for her.

"Now it's time to visit Heaven." So 24 hours pass with the head of state joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before she realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well then, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity."

She reflects for a minute, then the head of state answers: "Well, I could never have said it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell."

So Saint Peter escorts her to the elevator and she goes down, down, down to Hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and she is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. She sees all her friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. The Devil comes over to her and lays his arm on her neck.

"I don't understand," stammers the head of state. Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and club and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

The Devil looks at her, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted for us!"

8. Very good joke. Reminds me of Trumans line, "To live like a Republican
You have to vote Democratic.
