Taking Advantage of Knowing that We Are In the End Times.
I was listening to "Family Radio" the other night on fm radio as I was driving my car. It's a fundamentalist religious radio station that my fundy family listens to.

Usually this old man is on taking calls and he always spouts off about how science doesn't know anything and the bible is literally true.

Well one night he goes into when the end of the world will be. He's pegged it as the year 2011.

I almost crashed my car after hearing him say the following: That a certain percentage of people, as much as one-third, would take advantage of knowing when the world will end.

He said they would purchase homes and cars and all sorts of things on credit knowing full well that they wouldn't have to pay for them because the world will end.

 He was as serious as a heart attack.

1. This happened already
I think back in the 80's, a woman ran up her credit cards because she thought the rapture was coming. The credit card companies sued her for the money, she won.

2. Starting a war on credit, would that count?
Or how about our current Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, who learned her craft from the estimable James Watt, who once said, "we don't have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand."

5. You're not in Indiana are you?
The only time I happened upon something so dreadful, I was driving across Southern Indiana.

6. Nope. I'm inside the beltway in a suburb of DC.
Damn. You know I never realized that in a way this has indeed already happened.

It explains why Bush is spending so much damn money doesn't it. Like there's no tomorrow.

I guess the laugh is on me.

8. How do you think I feel, I'm from Indiana
and I have to put up with this crap all the time!

You'd think the guy would be telling people to give all their money and possessions away because they won't need it. You know, so they could help other people and things. Geesh. Really smart thinking. I'm sure the Lord will look kindly on them, don't you?

9. Kinda makes policy sense
It doesn't matter how much you mess things up -- disastrous, costly wars; strangling deficits; horrific poverty; insurmountable debt -- because the world is going to end soon.

This is the Republican Party Plan for America, folks....

Two parts Books of Revelation, one part Kilkenney Cats....

10. It’s only the End-of-Times if you want it to be.
It seems that the “Rapture” concept only appeared about 200 years ago and it was revealed to or thought up, conceived and envisioned by a 19th century equivalent of Pat Robertson. The “you can’t trust anybody, but me” dogma is not unique to organized (flkey word) Christianity. Tyrants and despots, in order to control the masses long before Christ ever lived in this world, have used this approach as a lynchpin to their control, faith or whatever. They will save you from the end of the world, but they won’t try to stop it. It’s kind of like *’s war on terrorism. It’s a real threat that he can’t afford to win. Otherwise he would lose control.

On the other hand, global warming will eventually make us all extinct. Unfortunately, personal choices to counter the effects don’t go very far. It helps, but it requires a communal effort by all the nations of the world to educate, adapt and adopt new protocols to life on this planet. How odd that the * administration refuses to adopt the Kyoto protocol. In fact, they are actively reversing any efforts to preserve our national parks and resources. This is a real threat that they are willing to win in the short term because their “rapture” concept will remove them from the consequences.

I can only hope for an early epiphany. Otherwise, I hope they find their “rapture” in hell, here on the ravaged earth with the rest of us.
