Valerie Plame quits the CIA next month
Valerie Plame, the glamorous secret agent at the heart of the CIA leak scandal, is quitting the agency to become a full-time mom.

Plame, 42, wife of Iraq war critic Joseph Wilson, will retire next month from the CIA after 20 years tracking proliferators of weapons of mass destruction, CIA officials confirmed.

It was exposure of Plame's identity as a CIA operative in a 2003 column by Robert Novak that lead to the massive leak probe that resulted in last month's indictment of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief-of-staff.

1. I'm sorry to hear it
The good news is that she might finally be able to speak publicly.

22. The Senate? Christ, from the frying pan into the fire!
Why would someone like Plame -- who seems so hip, so smart, so attractive, and with a handsome husband -- want to join a bunch of gassy, corrupt bloated white guys in the senate? I could see if you have no other options why you'd want to be associated with those assholes, but she has so much more potential than that.

I can't imagine Plame would be so stupid as to leave one group of flaming assholes (the CIA) for another group of douche bags (corrupt senators).

At least you didn't wish she'd run for the house. Sweet virgin Mary, then she'd have to say at parties "Let me introduce you to my teammate, Tom Delay and of course, America's intellectual giant, Bob "freedom fry" Ney. Gentlemen, would you like some more beans?"

25. The point is to make the Senate better by getting rid of the scum
in favor of more honest, intelligent, sane, people.

It must suck to be in her situation with Goss in charge.

10. I fear that others may follow
I know that the CIA has a bad rap, but there are some people in it who are not political toadies, loose cannons, or goons -- they care about information and trying to learn about what's going on out there, not swaggering around being bullies. The intelligence-gathering and analysis part of their mandate actually fits with what I do in my job (geographer and policy analyst). I am sorry that responsible professionals like Ms. Plame are being driven out of the agency. She was trying to do good work, and she did put herself in danger. And now she is being punished because she and her husband (also an exemplary public servant) got too close to someone's plans.

11. when I hear that, my first thought is GREAT, now the CIA
can't keep her from speaking up and telling her story.

I remember reading earlier in the year about her frustration at being essentially gagged by the CIA, powerless to defend herself.

12. Do you think she will talk to the public?
I hate myself for that being the first thing I thought of. "Great, maybe she'll tell us her story in all this."

But no, Valerie, please go to your life as a full-time mom. Your life is yours now. You've served the rest of us for years; you can take care of yourself now. I'm sorry for all you've had to go through.

16. We in CA would welcome both of them with open arms and votes
if either one of them want to run for office in this state. Santa Barbara is a perfect place for these two classy people to live.

15. She had her career stolen.
Even if we believe that the vice president was only looking to get revenge against Wilson for exposing the yellow cake lie, the administration did something that previous administrations have not done: they went after his wife. That's low.

However, I do not believe that is the case. The exposing of Valerie Plame Wilson only makes sense to me in the context of something larger. I am convinced that someone close to Plame was getting too close to the truth on a case involving the sale of WMD components.

Either way, the administration was willing to risk the security of the nation in order to savagely attack an "enemy." And the truth was the enemy. They hate Wilson for being honest.

Whatever she does now (and retiring to raise their children might be a great option), I wish her & her family the best of luck. And I thank her for her service to America.

18. I read somewhere that Chimpy tried to plant WMD in Iraq and was
busted. Plame's and/or company was involved as well.

I'm trying to find the story and/or source.

19. The more I learn about the CIA, the less I like 'em.
All that left over Nazi/Dulles brothers/Bush shit doesn't seem to be working out real well for us peasants. The CIA seems to screw over everybody eventually, even one of their own.

Plame may have been a good egg, but the rest of the carton is smell-up-the-room Rotten. So saying good-bye to the CIA is a good thing.
And don't be too hard on yourself, Ms. Plame. I hear people often make mistakes after break-ups and divorce, even mistakes so bad as to join the CIA.
