Study: Tight Skirt Can Make Female Boss Look Dumb
Study: Tight Skirt Can Make Female Boss Look Dumb

POSTED: 10:51 am EST November 30, 2005

Although research has shown that physical attractiveness helps people get ahead, there can be too much of a good thing.

A study in the latest issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly finds that a sexy self-presentation with high-heels, a tight skirt and a low-cut blouse can hurt a businesswoman's effectiveness.

Men and women were shown a video of a businesswoman discussing her general background and hobbies. The script and actress remained the same, but her dress and job changed.

The sexiness manipulation had no effect on judgments of a receptionist. But a sexy manager was viewed as less competent when compared with a more professionally dressed counterpart, who wore flat shoes, slacks and a turtleneck. Sexy managers evoked hostile emotions and were deemed less intelligent.

3. They had a do a study to figure that out?
An evening of watching sitcoms would have done the trick.

5. Effects my judgment of a receptionist as well.
In a previous job I had to interview a number of candidates for a receptionist position and I was surprised by how many women showed up for the interview in "sexy" clothing that was not appropriate for an office.

I tried not to let their appearance rule them out but I couldn't help thinking that they wanted me to hire them for the way they looked instead of what really mattered.

23. The office isn't where you're supposed to show off your rack.
Or your butt.

Business wear isn't supposed to be about being 'sexy'.

I've noticed that cable newswomen are wearing tight, casual sweaters that say 'these are my breasts' and men wear business suits. The women are just not dressed appropriately.

27. Agreed
Every time I see a news or weather person that looks too much like a model (male or female) or is dressed provocatively, I have to wonder if they were hired for their looks rather than their abilities.

6. Study: Studies about the effectiveness of tight skirts is 90% likely
to be conducted by men who want to see hot models in tight skirts - and 5% likely to have a camera mounted in the changing room.

17. Why are studies like this done? Why?
Who the hell got grant money for this? Honestly, I think there is a consortium of researchers called the Captain Obvious Foundation to Confirm Stereotypes or something. It'd be nice if all this research effort went into something, oh I don't know, productive and worthwhile that could actually help people. I mean, who the f*&k doesn't know you should dress appropriately for work? Besides Katherine Harris....:eyes:

18. I wonder if they've ever done a similar study on men?
Male managers who dress in a way that emphases their sex appeal, surrounded with a miasma of expensive colone. "Dumb" doesn't come to mind but "obnoxious" and "Stupid" does.

I'm not sure why a woman manager would want to dress this way--it sounds very uncomfortable--8 hour plus days in a tight mini skirt and high heels. I work in the health field and the non-nursing managers on the businsess side of health care I've seen as a rule look very professional.

Interesting study.

A style of dress doesn't make a person look dumb, his/her actions and words do.

..I am less inclined to be concerned with their intellect, existent or not...

As long as she doesn't mind bending down to pick up my accidentally dropped pencils everything will be fine..especially if i can make out the outline of her thong....

Woof!! Woof!!
