Anyone else think we need a Hurricane Victims Forum?
I do, but that's just me.

A Hurricane Victims Forum would be a place for DU members from Louisiana, (and especially New Orleans), southern Mississippi and Alabama, South-west Texas and Southern Florida (Wilma) who are or have been victims of the recent Hurricanes to Check-in, meet each other, trade accounts, offer advice or just show support for their fellow victims. It could also be a place for posting Hurricane related news stories, which seem to have been bumped from the front pages, if they are still being reported at all.

I don't know if it would have to be a permanent forum, though New Orleans will be dealing with the effects of Katrina for years to come. Also, I've heard some here say that they (the Hurricane victims) feel they have been forgotten by the media and America in general.

The one DU member that I definitely know is from New Orleans and has been displaced to Memphis, Tennessee is Swamp Rat. He usually checks in during the late night, but told me last night that he doesn't know any other New Orleans DUers and is still looking for some of his friends.

If you think this would be a good new forum to add to DU, please post some sort of short reply, anything from a "I support it" to "good idea" to even just a thumbs up

So, who's in?

Also, if you are from the effected areas or know someone who is or is missing, please check in here too.

1. Great idea

I think it would be a great idea. I'm not in that area but if all of the posts were located in one spot it would be easier for those effected to communicate and for the rest of us to possibly help.

Cheers!

Been needing one for a while now.

I went through Katrina in Biloxi. My kids are still there and I'm in the planning stages of moving back down there.

14. Good to see you are O.K. and are back on line...
...How's you family doing in Biloxi? Is your house still standing?

Sending you a group hug. :grouphug:

P.S. We need to get DU to add Biloxi to the Spell Checker list.

10. still thinking abt it
my main issue is i worry such a forum would ghetto-ize an issue i see as being of national importance

i sort of feel it belongs in the general discussion rather than set off to the side

let me give a kick and sleep on it

12. I think we do...we need to have a forum for keeping an important topic
alive and as an information source for those of us needing to find it and to share it to help those in that region and to even connecting people.

Count me in...

I support it... :hi:

Anyone know off-hand how many positive responses we need to make this happen?

I'll be checking on it, but if anyone does know the procedure off-hand, it might save some time.

18. Yes, we all could learn from it
I was very surprised to hear about the problems in Florida long after we quit hearing about Wilma.

It is too easy to forget Katrina too. I know most of the people who went through it and still lack their "real" home or job or are still looking for family don't post here, but posts slip to the 2nd page too fast on GD.

19. O.K., here goes, I'm about to propose the new Hurricane Victims Forum...
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 06:31 PM by Up2Late
...to the admins, we will see what they think of the idea soon.

Anyone else who want to join this group are always welcome.

One final question, should it be the "Hurricane Victims Forum" or "Hurricane Victims Group" or just "Hurricane Victims?"

I like "Hurricane Victims Forum," but I'm not sure if they will let it be called a Forum, but I do think it sounds more open to all than if it is called a Group.

If you are curious about this process, the info is at this link:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Sam, the tiny dog whose hairless body and crooked teeth earned him a reputation as the World’s Ugliest Dog, has died.

The pooch died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday, his owner said.
