Shouldn't Fundies be trying to put Christ back into Christmas
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:24 AM by kskiska
by removing the rampant commercialism and getting back to basics, rather than bickering over whether Wal-Mart wishes them "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?" Wouldn't you think they'd want to do away with all the shopping & decorations and teach their children that Christmas is about Jesus, not toys?

But then, that wouldn't be as satisfying because they wouldn't be imposing their will on the rest of us.

2. maybe most would not go for the religion without all the gifts and hoopla.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:01 AM by msongs
like a local restaurant chain says, "come for the dinner, stay for the pie", most people would have nothing to do with the myths without all the decorations, parties, and gifts to keep them distracted from the core issues.

PS - without all the ceremonies and symbolism taken from the pagans and PREVIOUSLY EXISTING religions christmas would be rather deadly dull and dreary.

edit to add the PS

3. Yeah, and why aren't they putting the manger scene in their OWN yards
instead of some inflatable snowman from Walmart?

They'd rather bitch that the schoolhouse or courthouse doesn't have the manger scene, I guess . . .

5. Fundies aren't satisfied to practice religion on their own turf
They have to cram it down everybody else's throats, parade it through the town, broadcast it over the airwaves, then whine about how persecuted they are if anybody protests.

4. I'm not sure they know him.
Not many of their quotes come from the New Testament.

8. Not much of their behavior comes from him either
It's all about appearances. Lip service only.

6. Corrupt Christians believe giving toys = Christ giving his life
It's the giving season. It's really corrupt Christianity coupled with corrupt capitalism. Neither has anything to do with Christ.

7. I too thought Jesus was the Reason for the Season, not rack up bill$$$$$$$
while beating others up to get the toy fad of the year or cheep electronics! I why aren't they protesting the rampant disgusting consumerism that has violated everything He stood for? Why do these Christians Hate Christmas?

10. Maybe Jesus took himself out
not wanting to be part of a holiday that honors over spending and exchanging stuff between people who have too much stuff.

He might like it better if in his honor we gave stuff to the stuffless, such as shelter to those without homes, basics like food and clothing and once that was taken care of some simple toys to kids who have none.

If we listened he might be trying to remind us there are people starving, people freezing, sick people with no help. Imagine if the money our nation spends on excess stuff went to help them. Oops, that isn't jolly.

Last Christmas as a banished smoker I was outside watching stars and singing Christmas carols to myself. I heard the words I sang.
When I came back in I noted how nice the idea of peace on earth and good will were and that was what Christmas seemed to promise, but it's been a couple thousand years and it's not doing so well. My son firmly told me this wasn't the time for that kind of discussion.

Christmas not the time to talk about the promise of Jesus? OK, let's wait for ground hog day.

12. heck what if we only took what we spent on giftwrap & ribbons
to give those who don't have diddly squat! I think most of us would be amazed at how much that would add up to and how much good could be spread around.

11. Impossible.
They'd have to put Christ back into themselves first.
