Meet Nelson Mandela, 30 years in prison--who emerged to become...the first black president of South Africa.
Meet, oh, just about any black American--great-grandchild of a slave whose body was bought and sold, who was considered 2/3rds of a human being, who had not even the meagerest of rights (the right to life). Hundreds of years of the worst kind of oppression, and they never gave up, and they rebelled, and they ran away, and they tried to comfort and encourage each other, and pass some hope on to the next generation, and, finally, Rosa Parks had had enough of second class citizenship, and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, and Martin Luther King, and a whole of lot of others took on the beatings, and the water hoses, and the spittles, and the unjust jail sentences, and all the abuse white society had to throw at them, voluntarily--as a lesson to all--to end segregation.
Don't be discouraged, kick. We have not lost our nation. Not yet. The majority of Americans are with us. Believe me. I know it to be true. I could throw a lot of statistics at you--an unassailable case that MOST Americans love peace, justice, fairness, and lawfulness, and utterly reject ALL Bush junta policy (--way up in the 60% to 70% range, across the board in all polls, for two years now). But just know it, okay? And that means that there is something--someone, the majority of Americans--to fight for. To help re-empower and re-enfranchise them. To help inform them that--contrary to impressions foisted upon us by the corporate news monopolies--we, the progressive thinkers, the believers in democracy--are the majority in this country, and we ARE taking this country back.
It's not an easy fight, considering all that's happened, and all the ways that our Corporate Rulers have hedged us in. And it is not all up to you. This is a collective thing that is happening--the recovery of our democracy. So, if you feel depressed and demoralized, take a break. Go do something creative, or nurturing, or satisfying in some way, apart from all this. The earth needs healing. It needs green things growing. Do some gardening. Plant a tree! Renew yourself--and then re-join the political fight, if that's the best use of your energy.
I know a lot of history, and I've been in politics and public advocacy for a long time, and, believe me, I know about this depressed/discouraged syndrome. And that's just where the fascists, and the corporate news monopolies, and the war profiteers, and the Bushites want you to be: in a deep dark hole of depression and discouragement.
Don't let them do it to you! Get out of it! Be alive, be a bright light, and--if you decide to be-in their face every day, calling them on their lies, and telling truth to power; or, alternatively, helping to CREATE the great community and the great democracy you want to live in.
