Sick, wounded U.S. troops held in squalor
By MARK BENJAMIN, UPI Investigations Editor

FORT STEWART, Ga., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Hundreds of sick and wounded U.S. soldiers including many who served in the Iraq war are languishing in hot cement barracks here while they wait -- sometimes for months -- to see doctors.

The National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers' living conditions are so substandard, and the medical care so poor, that many of them believe the Army is trying push them out with reduced benefits for their ailments. One document shown to UPI states that no more doctor appointments are available from Oct. 14 through Nov. 11 -- Veterans Day.

"I have loved the Army. I have served the Army faithfully and I have done everything the Army has asked me to do," said Sgt. 1st Class Willie Buckels, a truck master with the 296th Transportation Company. Buckels served in the Army Reserves for 27 years, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and the first Gulf War. "Now my whole idea about the U.S. Army has changed. I am treated like a third-class citizen."

Since getting back from Iraq in May, Buckels, 52, has been trying to get doctors to find out why he has intense pain in the side of his abdomen since doubling over in pain there.

snip

One month after President Bush greeted soldiers at Fort Stewart -- home of the famed Third Infantry Division -- as heroes on their return from Iraq, approximately 600 sick or injured members of the Army Reserves and National Guard are warehoused in rows of spare, steamy and dark cement barracks in a sandy field, waiting for doctors to treat their wounds or illnesses.

The Reserve and National Guard soldiers are on what the Army calls "medical hold," while the Army decides how sick or disabled they are and what benefits -- if any -- they should get as a result.

This is awful. Living conditions aside...why do they have to wait so long to see a doctor? :(

7. that would be the BushCo approach

wounded soldiers are expensive.

dead soldiers are cheap.

and Halliburton will pick up a few bucks digging graves or building crematoriums...

/pitch black humor off

sickening, but who's surprised?

9. Standard Procedure
Cannot be released from military service until the cause of any illness is discovered. And the military determines what percentage of disability that the soldier can receive.

There could be another reason, perhaps certain members of Congress(Delay, Hastert, Frist) are working on a rider to a military allocation bill that would disqualify Reservists and National Guardsmen from being able to receive any type of disability payments.

We all know how much the Republicans in Congress really support the troops, and their sheep will go along with it. And I'll bet that O'Reilly and Hannity will say that the budget must be cut to fight the war on terror. The media will place it on the ticker on TV and put it near the entertainment section in the paper.

Why don't people here understand, the American public is totally unaware and uncaring about the plight of these soldiers. If veterans organizations actually cared they would buy a full page add, so that the people will know what will happen to Reservists and Guardsmen.

Remember what Rep Nethercutt said, a few soldiers dying isn't as important as the good things that are happening in Iraq. Too bad they found that explosive device before the commerce secretary's bus ran over it. Maybe if something like that happened more people would take notice, providing they're not stuck to the TV watching Kobe Bryant.

5. "Slimy Shrub" is jetting around the world
while this happens to our wounded military. This is only one base - Ft. Stewart. How many more are out there at other bases? "Help is on the Way" - When?

6. The rah rah gang
has been listening to Ann Coulter who said
To a disabled Vietnam vet: "People like you caused us to lose that war."---MSNBC

Liberals are the ones sobbing about cutting healthcare and other social programs. And liberals are the one who were against the war in the first place.

8. Guess who's stupid? That's right - the media.
While this is terrible in the extreme, why have I not seen any headlines like the following?

Sick, Wounded Iraqis Held in Squalor, or Maybe Shot, or Perhaps Just IGNORED TO DEATH.

That's a headline I'd like to see. How 'bout it, CNN? Oh... wait. Kobe time again. Larry King is interviewing his sneakers.
