Plame Update

According to CNN both Luskin and Viveca Novak will be testifying next week. At issue appears to be the fact that Fitzgerald "misinterpreted" (uhh) and thought that a conversation between Luskin and Novak actually happened between Rove and Novak.

BUT THIS FROM FIREDOGLAKE:"I am hearing through sources that the Franken story is crap" (see UPDATE below).

OB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, it's very delicate. We're picking up that there could be two principals in this getting deposed next week giving sworn statements. Those two would include Karl Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin and Viveca Novak of "Time Magazine."

Now it really comes down to, when all is said and done, a question of who said what to whom when.

And the who is very important because we're being told by a variety of sources that the special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, was planning to indict Karl Rove for misrepresenting during the investigation an interview comments that he had made to a reporter. However, there was a key conversation, sources say, and there may have been a misunderstanding by the special prosecutor that a conversation that he was attributing to Rove with Viveca Novak of "Time Magazine" may, in fact, have really been held by Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin.

What we're supposed to believe (i.e., the Rovian spin) is that Fitzgerald erroneously thought that Rove had "mis-testified" about a conversation he had with Viveca Novak (and there are rumors that she has been interviewed by Fitzgerald before). But, voila! Turns out the conversation was not with Rove but with V. Novak's good pal Robert Luskin. Fitzgerald's mistake. Luskin will go in, clear up the whole mess, and poor honest Karl will go into the back yard and chop down a cherry tree then confess to Karen Hughes over pie and ice cream before bedtime.

I am hearing through sources that the Franken story is crap, 100% spin. Fitzgerald is supposedly busy right now dealing with Bob Woodward, who may have earned himself a trip to the grand jury next week for his efforts, and with Woodward's source, whoever that may turn out to be. Only then will he start dealing with Viveca Novak, and the "Fitzgerald made a mistake" rumor is pure bullshit. And nobody at this point is buying the story that Luskin himself is going in to testify.

I actually sent a comp copy to firedoglake for their perusal, I should ask them what they/she thought of it - H20Man LOVED it and wrote a wonderful review, saying he watched it THREE times :)

Of course he was snowbound, but I assume he had other movies :)

Firedoglake has had their finger on the pulse of this mess from the start and there's not many I trust on any sort of speculation then I do them/her..

and I believe that ROve IS going down, just a matter of time, and I can't wait!

in the first 36 hours I had it. Plenty more times since! I bought a number of copies of it for holiday presents, but was so impressed with it that I handed out copies to family and friends right away.

We are at a time that people in the administration are putting out more misinformation than at any time since Fitzgerald took the case.

Rove is easy to despise. He certainly played a key role in spreading Plame's identity around. Few quotes expose a lower dog than his, "Wilson's wife is fair game." I don't think he is as significant in terms of neoconservative history as Libby. But of course he is generally more recognizeable.

It might be safe to bet that there is pressure being put on Karl right now, that offers him a chance to plead to a relatively minor charge and testify honestly about someone we will codename "Dick C.," or face three criminal charges. I'd be surprised if he doesn't fold by Christmas .... but you never know.

Anyone who knows anything about going on now knows how Rove is such a high player in all of this. There's only so much spinning they can do and eventually it will catch up to them. Right now they're not having anything happen because they're trying to buy time so they're hoping probably it'll go over to 2007. But hey wouldn't it be nice if the whole thing ends right before 2006 midterms and the democrats sweep the House AND Senate?

Jane, you could be right about the Rove spin, but this new info on the timing may come from Viveca's side.

Here is the update I wrote for my DKOS diary on this article. I think there are a couple of other interesting nuggests in this article.

Here is why I think this WAPo story from VandeHei is damaging for Rove.

First:
The article closes in on the date of the Viveca Novak/Luskin conversation. Since the article states that the conversation occured before Rove's 1st Grand Jury testimony in Feb 2004, the conversation must have occured in Jan or Feb 2004.

Second:
The article states that "In that appearance, Rove testified that he did not recall talking to Cooper about Plame."

This is important for 2 reasons, it implies that Rove was asked about talking to Cooper in his 1st GJ appearance and second we know that Rove's lawyer already knew about Cooper.

Third:
The email comes up again. The article says that



The e-mail was written from Rove's government account, which investigators searched early in the inquiry. It is unclear why the e-mail was not discovered at that time.
