Ohio Dems to Protest Rejection of Schmidt Billboards
News Advisory:
Ohio Democrats to Protest Lamar Advertising's Rejection of DNC Jean Schmidt Billboards

Ohio State Rep. John Boccieri, a major in the Air Force Reserve and a C-130 pilot who served four tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, will join Ohio Democratic Party Communications Director Brian Rothenberg for a news conference on Sunday, Dec. 4 to protest the decision by Lamar Advertising to reject two billboards purchased this week by the Democratic National Committee.

The billboards sought to hold Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt accountable for attacking Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a decorated military veteran, during a Congressional debate on the Iraq war. After signing a contract with the DNC to run the ads this week, Lamar Advertising arbitrarily rejected the billboards, refusing to honor its contract for the Portsmouth billboards and to accept the same advertisement for placement on billboards in Cincinnati.

The news conference with Rep. Boccieri and Rothenberg will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. in front of Rep. Schmidt's Portsmouth office at 601 Chillicothe Street.

1. I will never forget the name Lamar Advertising. Will help put them under
in any way I can. Sons-of-bitches like this need to be accountable as the Nazi's that they are.

6. But what do you want to bet....
that they have a little American flag on the front window of their business, with a sign saying, "We Support Our Troops!"

4. It's time to make a list of companies using Lamar Advertising
and notify them that they are supporting an unpatriotic corporation which seeks to destroy American values.

5. I've bought a lot of Antiques in Portsmouth Ohio over the years.
I have spent my last penny in Portsmouth, or Ironton, until they replace Jean Schmidt in congress and get rid of Blackwell and Bubp! I'm going to boycott Ohio, because they voided my vote in 2004. I'll bet the unemployment rate up and down the Ohio valley is about the highest in the country again, like it was when Reagan was president.

8. Write to their CVB and tell them that.
And the rest of us should as well.

CVBs work like hell to bring dollars into a town. Once they realize that Schmidt is destroying their livelihood, they'll wise up. Dollars always speak louder than anything else.

13. Please don't take out your anger on Portsmouth!! They supported Hackett!!
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 11:51 AM by theHandpuppet
This is one issue the Ohio Democratic Party must make clear to those who don't know the political demographics of District 2!

Scioto County (Portmouth is the county seat) DID NOT support Jean Schmidt for Congress! In fact, Scioto County went for Hackett by a HUGE margin -- 65% to 35%, more than any other county in the district. Further, it was the four poorer, rural counties in eastern D2 (Scioto, Adams, Pike and Brown) which all went for Hackett. It was the more populous and prosperous counties to the west (Cincy area) which went for Schmidt: Hamilton, Warren and Clermont. Ironton, in Lawrence County, isn't even IN District 2.

The Dems are taking their stand in Portmouth PRECISELY because that's where their real strength lies! By boycotting Portsmouth you would actually be punishing the folks who are supporting Dems the most.

Lamar advertising is NOT a Portsmouth company, but a Louisiana one with district offices in Cincinnati (Schmidt-Bush lovers' world) and Huntington, WV.

So PLEASE, folks, inform yourselves before you punish a poor area which is doing its best to fight for the Dems. Support Portsmouth and the four Appalachian counties of District Two who are fighting back against Jean Schmidt and the neofascists.

16. Kicking because folks need to read this
And because the Dem Party is unwittingly making Scioto County, where they have the most support, the brunt of a lot of anger over this issue.

7. Newspapers
So if those billboards are rejected I suggest just putting on the front page in every major Ohio newspaper on Oct 30, 2006 a "little" reminder of what she said to Murtha. Hackett is going to annihilate her anyway.

10. Yes, we need a list of all who use Lamar billboards and write to them
If anyone can get a list or just make note. Maybe there should be something in the Activist HQ where someone who lives there can update who is advertising on those billboards? This would be a good DU 5-star activist project.

14. Lamar Advertising is a publicly traded company
NASDAQ symbol LAMR. They're even a member of the NASDAQ 100. That means that a lot of mutual funds own their shares. We have leverage beyond just the companies that use their services for advertising. They have a duty to "maximize shareholder value" and big mutual fund companies won't be happy if they aren't doing so.

"Sinclair" these mofoes.

15. Sweet! What a major screw up by Lamar. This sign will keep giving and...
giving.

It will finally go up....somewhere. In the mean time the DNC is doing just fine with the great extra PR cause by Lamar. Thanks Lamar!
