Why THIS Atheist / Socialist LOVES Christmas!
I'll assume for a minute that "Christmas" lasts, let's say..., approximately one week (the whole 'season' thing). Many people take that much time off, do things they normally wouldn't, ect...

This seems to be the ONE time of year where people TRY to care (average people mind you).

Stories always pop up of people FEELING like they should do good things. FINALLY give a couple of bucks to the homeless guy on the corner they have shunned the rest of the year, MAYBE volunteer to feed the homeless, MAYBE tip a little extra, MAYBE help a neighbor get that tree in the house or help clear their snow-covered drive. MAYBE more people do a nice thing for someone ELSE that week. MAYBE they give a little more to charity. MAYBE they help wrap gifts for underprivileged children. MAYBE they are genuinely NICER and HELPFUL to people they otherwise would IGNORE.

Yeah, for many it makes up for ignoring the greater good the rest of the year and yeah, many of their reasons might be selfish but society WINS for one day or one week!

MAYBE that is all they do all year but why knock that? I don't frankly care if they (for once) do it in the name of some religion or pretend they do it because their religion has taken over a date on a calendar.

It is the SOCIAL thing to do and if THAT is their excuse to do the right thing then so be it. They are doing it. SOME of us do it year around but know what? I'll let them believe in Purple, Thong Wearing Hippos if they will AT LEAST do the SOCIAL thing once a year. Better than never I guess.

I love the Christmas season for this one reason. For one day or one week, SOCIAL AWARENESS has its place no matter the reason for a large section of the population. I'll take all I can get from Americankind. However little that may be.

Hey, its a start. We have our day. May it strengthen into our MONTH!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS & MERRY SOLSTICE!!

PEACE

1. Why this person who would probably conclude that he's an atheist
if he gave a big enough darn to put some thought into it LOVES Christmas:

Memories and Santa and family and toys and fun and food and no school and no work and cold weather and warm fires and colorful lights and hugs and stuff.

4. When I use to work in an union shop
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 07:48 PM by LiviaOlivia
the person right above me in seniority, (that meant vacation pick), always picked the two week Christmas and New Year's block. Yet this person was a vocal atheist, anti-Xmas and a severe Xian critic. I never understood why, despite all her rhetoric, she never saw the hypocrisy in her actions.

Like Pavlov's dog one can be "trained" via culture and what follows is that the human mind needs to rationalize the actions and rhetoric to cope.

Whatever dude. It's just another day.

on edit: I believe social awareness should be practiced every day.

We enjoy the holiday time with family and food and drink.

And The Neil Diamond Christmas Album is the best Christmas music and its sung by a Jew.

10. Santa Claus wears a red suit and he looks like Karl Marx
He also brings free gifts to children everywhere!

On the other hand, the elves may claim that Santa does not allow them to unionize and to bargain for better wages and conditions.

Happy Holidays and Merry Winter Solstice to you!

12. We had a poster of Santa Marx hanging in my AP European history class
My friend Will made it. It was Karl Marx in sunglasses and a Santa hat, and was sort of our mascot.

11. Yep
And even if people do no more than be a littler kinder to their families and neighbors and co-workers, then that in itself is A LOT. I love the holidays, from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
