Kerry's Christmas Goose Is in the Bag
Sorry, PETA; Sen. John Kerry really does hunt--and not just when the campaign cameras are whirring. Remember that scene in late October of last year's presidential election when Kerry emerged from a muddy Ohio field in a new camo jacket cradling a shotgun but not his dead goose? The one that prompted critics to giggle that the photo op was ginned up to show that the Boston brahmin was a regular guy?

Well, sources tell us that Kerry is an avid bird and deer hunter, and a good shot to boot. The proof: Early last week, he traveled to Nebraska for a waterfowl hunt. The senator and some friends, including old Swift Boat pal Jim Wasser, bagged 10 mallards, some smaller widgeons, and two Canada geese. We hear "J.K." and Wasser met near Decatur, Neb., by the Missouri River, huddled in a bunkhouse, grilled some steaks, popped a few beers, and watched the Colts-Steelers Monday-night football game on a 14-inch TV. They were out by 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. Temperature: 19 degrees. Wind: 30 mph. Kerry, armed with a Benelli shotgun; Wasser, and six others set the decoys on a pond and jumped into two blinds. At sunup, three ducks screamed in and the crew nailed 'em with their 12-gauges. Nearly a dozen more fell by lunchtime, all retrieved by the host's black lab, Bo. "Not bad for a few hours' hunting," said a Kerry buddy, who added that the birds will probably be served for Christmas dinner.

Bite me, Rove and Hughes!

Ahem. Don't mind me. Just had to get that out.

9. Media made Bush to be a sportsman while Kerry hunted since he was a boy.
Kerry is an expert marksman, too.

Kerry was the one who can ride just about any type of horse, while Bush is afraid of horses but pretends he runs a ranch.

Kerry is an expert pilot, while Bush was afraid to land and dropped out.

Kerry plays soccer, hockey, skis, windsurfs, sails and marathon bikes. Bush can keep score at baseball.

Kerry rides motorcycles and has for 40 years - Bush falls off of Segways.

Yet the media completely twisted them around.

4. Thanks for sharing
I got tired of that "oh it's a photo-op" nonsense. Not everything is a photo-op. You can usually tell. And I have read that Kerry is a long time sportsman with hunting. And he's eating it. Good. I don't mind hunting as long as you're going to use it to eat or if you need the money or something like that.

7. I met Jim Wasser when he came out with Max Cleland
It was a good little rally. A nurse who had helped Max when he came back from the war was there, crying her eyes out.

So I was pleased to find that Kerry and Wasser still hang together.

5. Bush too busy checking his pulse. Now, Cheney, there is slaughter central
Except he would have, as he has done before, a couple hundred pheasants released within yards of him and some rich oil exec buddies on a Pennsylvania farm, and blast 'em. What a sportsman.

6. I figured as much.
Despite what the media desperately tried to make it into, it wasn't a photo-op--it was a hunting trip with friends that the f**king press followed him on.

I like his smile. Labs have great personalities, but they will drive you crazy wanting to retrieve.

I'll bet he weighed about 70-80 pounds.

12. Why does one have to hunt to be masculine?
I've never got this part at all. I do not begrudge any hunters out there; the hunting bug has never bit me, but what is it about someone having to hunt to be masculine or tough?

What skill does it take to point a highly accurate piece of equipment that fires a highly accurate bullet at an unsuspecting animal? Take big game hunters for example. I've read puff pieces where you have overweight office people taken out to the woods by guides who then tell them what setting to put their sights and scopes on when shooting an Elk or other animal.

I'd rather have a president who openly deals with American military casualties than one who things carrying a chunk of formed metal makes a man.

15. It doesn't look like he does it to be manly
It looks like he likes to hunt and eat and drink beer and watch football.

They tried to show him in this "regular guy" mode during the campaign, but it didn't come off. But he didn't deserve Rove and Hughes making fun of him when he actually does hunt.

Harvey Fierstien and RuPaul would be better leaders than Bush & Cheney.

13. I'm no vegetarian or PETA activist, but...
...the fact that Skull-n-Bones Kerry kills animals for fun does not make me like him any more. I grew up in Texas, and I never killed an animal for fun. I have fished, and eaten what I caught, and that's it.

And THESE three - :puke:

14. For fun? Where do you get that?
He eats them.

And he could likely give a crap if you like him any more when he's out with his buddy Jim eating steaks, drinking beer and watching football in between shooting shit he's gonna eat later.

This is about not letting the RW spin our candidates, be them Gore or Kerry, into something they weren't. Gore never said he invented the internet. Kerry really did hunt.

Btw, what does his college frat have to do with anything? He didn't go hunting with his college buddies. He went hunting with his Vietnam buddy.

16. How can you be so sure of that? It's not in the article.
Edited on Sat Dec-03-05 08:47 PM by Yollam
He eats all the mallards, widgeons, and deer he kills? Sounds like Ted Nugent.

Skull-n-bones is not a frat, it's a secretive club made up of rich & powerful people including both presidents Bush.

Kerry is either a fool, or deliberately lost the election last year - I tend to favor the latter.

BTW, he wasn't "my" candidate, he was the candidate chosen by the short-sighted democrats of Iowa & New Hampshire, and anointed by the party's power elite.

You may mourn his loss, but why? He had promised to continue the Iraq occupation and cancel the Bush tax cuts. Big Whoop. Hardly "City on a Hill" level of ambition if you ask me.

Watching Bushco implode over the coming months will be much more fun that watching a hapless Kerry deal with an impossible GOP congress would've been.

You are aware that Kerry is finito as a presidential candidate, aren't you? It's not gonna happen. He had his shot and he blew it.

I don't know who it's going to be, but another democrat will come out of the woodwork, and with any luck, it will be another Bill Clinton, or better.

But if you want to keep mooning over Kerry, who am I to stop you?

20. You were absolutely sure it was for fun
"the fact that Skull-n-Bones Kerry kills animals for fun"

The article says:

"Not bad for a few hours' hunting," said a Kerry buddy, who added that the birds will probably be served for Christmas dinner.

Doesn't really matter though, it's apparent some people want to consider their opinions facts and their bitterness virtuous.

22. Naw, it wasn't in the article anywhere.
:sarcasm:
Thanks for pointing that up. How can I be lectured to about the facts when all we know about Skull and Bones is that it's a club at Yale. You have to be quite the conspiracy theorist to make anything of his belonging to it.

If we did indeed lose the election, this is one of the reasons why. I took the time to turn myself from ABB to supporter so that I could campaign properly for the guy. I wish more folks had taken that time as well. It didn't take much digging to find out this was a man of integrity.

And God knows if the S and B connection (which is B and S btw) meant anything to Kerry, I don't think Poppy Bush would have been in his sights during the BCCI investigation.

I don't think I'm the one having trouble with reality.

23. Why do I now have this image of legs and hooves sticking out of
a freezer in the garage.

Because I'm sick that why.

My grandma made deer hash once. It sucked. But the dear sausage a co-worker had made was quite yummy.

25. LOL
That was funny. Bambi isn't in the freezer whole. We used proper tools purchased from a butcher who retired and packed it ourselves. It's too expensive to take to a meat-packing place around here.

There's a couple of reasons people think deer meat sucks. This is my opinion, but I don't think aging helps the meat a bit, not like a beef steak. It enhances the gamey taste. And it definitely should be packed properly for freezing or the moisture loss also enhances that gamey taste. Ground venison is very lean and can be dry as a bone unless fat is added. We prefer pork fat, although some people add beef fat. Deer steaks are like a round steak cooking-wise. You've either got to simmer them in a sauce forever or cook them rare. I make a spicy venison steak in red wine sauce that will just knock your socks off. :) I'm making deer jerky this weekend. You don't know good eatin' until you try deer jerky. ;)
