Bush hopes for lift from upbeat economic reports By Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, trying to lift his sagging approval ratings, has launched a push to take credit for recent positive economic news the public has largely shrugged off.

In one example of the pessimism, an ABC/Washington Post poll taken in the month ended November 13 showed 64 percent of Americans described the economy as poor or not so good, with only 36 percent judging it to be good or excellent.

That dovetails with November 17-20 Gallup poll that found just 36 percent of Americans thought the economy was getting better while 58 percent saw it as getting worse.

"I think the White House is very frustrated," said Cesar Conda, former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney. "There's been good data on gross domestic product, employment and business spending, and even oil prices are receding. But it's not reflected in the polling data on Americans' views."

In addition to a desire to stem a slide in the president's own popularity, Bush aides hope honing the economic message will help create a more favorable environment for Republicans ahead of next year's congressional elections.

... Lots of luck chimpy.

3. There's that 36% again
"only 36 percent judging it (the Economy) to be good or excellent"

Same bunch that believe Iraq is going great, Saddam planned 9/11, Bush is doing a good job, Christmas is under attack and the Universe is 6000 years old.

5. I was a little disappointed with Keith Olbermann on Friday...
...I'm going to take a look at the transcript when MSNBC posts it next week, but he seemed to be asking why Bush isn't getting a major bounce from the "good news" about the economy.

One possibility that he offered is that the war has been Bush's "issue," and that he hasn't been visibly "hand on" with economic matters.

I think a bigger reason is that jobs are still bleeding freely to India, China, Mexico...people here are still unemployed or underemployed...and I personally don't know ANYONE who gives a rat's ass about "house flippers / speculators" and the investor class taking victory laps over their gains in Bush's America.

:grr:

6. I read an interesting book about 3 months ago.
The author felt that politicians are amazingly stupid. He wrote that "they take the credit when the economy is doing well. So when the economy is going down the toilet, the public assumes the politicians were responsible for that, too".

So it was stupid of them to take credit to begin with.

Stupid Bush.

Notice how everything is "Launched" "major initiative" ,or a "major speech this week", or "Recipe for Victory in Iraq". He never quits campaigning.

Not the average American that's for sure. He will never get it - you cannot keep repeating something until it becomes true.

8. Statistics are easily faked
These people control the whole federal government. All of it. Faking the economic statistics is not rocket science for them.

11. Well, for one thing, the 500,000 people displaced from New Orleans
probably all got construction and minimum wage Holiday season jobs. Thats why unemployment didn't change and stayed at 5% (which is a lie to begin with). They just moved from one job to another.

Just a thought?

9. It's two things...
1) It's the stats they're not gloating about... long-term unemployment ~20% with many underemployed or working multiple jobs... middle class being hollowed out.

2) The American people have been getting wise to the Bush regime's tactics. Bush will never recover his standing unless and until he reverses his policies 180 degrees, and that appears unlikely to occur.

10. the war will keep his numbers low and thats the end of that story
rhetoric verses reality and people turn on the tube and they see more soldiers died today because Bush sent them to Iraq.
