Petition to STOP McPherson's rushed certification of Diebolds (Calif.)
http://ga3.org/campaign/diebold_test?rk=YdAfG291MX4OE

From Debra Bowen, Democratic candidate for Secretary of State:

Diebold voting machines must pass the hack test!

It's time to restore the public's trust in how our votes are counted here in California. But, if Republican Secretary of State Bruce McPherson has his way, that may not happen.

With a January 1, 2006 deadline looming, Secretary of State McPherson is considering recertification of Diebold electronic voting machines for use in California elections, even though recent studies have shown failure rates of up to 20% on some Diebold systems.

That's outrageous! The very integrity of our elections is on the line -- and the people of California deserve a thorough, rigorous testing of these Diebold voting machines before they're used in our state ever again.

Tell Secretary of State Bruce McPherson to thoroughly test the Diebold electronic voting machines before even considering using them in the next California election!

We'd hope that Diebold will have to face more than just one hacker's attempts to reveal flaws (euphemism), but this is a very important emergency measure!

Please sign!

1. Just an FYI for those who weren't already aware of it:
Debra Bowen was the ONLY member of California's State Legislature to show up at McPherson's unpublicized "public hearing" about Diebold certification, on November 21st.

:patriot: Debra Bowen! :applause: :patriot:

4. That's a good question.
I'm not seeing anything on the petition page that indicates that it's limited to California residents.
If I lived outside of CA, I'd sign it anyway.

What's it going to take to get accountabiity into the voting process.

You do realize what we're up against. Diebold has it's infrastructure firmly in place. Since they're already here at the ATM's, they can compete like no other company. That's my guess. But it's probably true. Why can't we spend money on voting like we do on the military? You know, mil-spec voting. This is total bullshit. They know it.

edit- Voting is more important than the military.

13. CA dems legislators do NOT care about this issue.....
that is why they appointed a repub as SoS. but this is not new.

CA dems should DEMAND open source code from any voting machine.

14. Thanks for the post! GO, DEBRA! Finally, FINALLY a Calif. Dem who
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 05:14 PM by Peace Patriot
will stand up for our right to vote!!!!! She's bucking big time corruption (both Dem and Repub). That's been part of the problem. Some Dems DO care, but they are overpowered by the combined force of bipartisan electronic voting system corruption, wrought by the $4 billion HAVA boondoggle, lavish lobbying and "revolving door" employment.

F. i., our former Repub Sec of State Bill Jones and his chief aide Alfie Charles now work for Sequoia electronic voting systems, one of the big three, and also run on "TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY software. They brought this e-voting disaster to Calif, now they work for that industry. On the Dem side, Diebold advocate Connie McCormack in Los Angeles is best friends--wines, dines and vacations--with Diebold's former chief salesperson in Calif, Deborah Sieler, who is now ass't registrar in San Joaquin County. And they all wine and dine together at posh events, like the one at the Beverly Hilton this August--a week of fun, sun and high end shopping for election officials from around the country, sponsored by...guess who?...Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia!

See Amaryllis' post on the Beverly Hilton event. It'll burn your eyeballs!

-----------

We need...

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% automatic recount (AT LEAST), very strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

---------

We also need verification tools for '06 and '08...

--"parallel elections"
--vigilant statistical and other monitoring (see www.UScountvotes.org)
--INDEPENDENT EXIT POLLS (get on the Dems about this!)
--and other verification tools

---------

See Bob Koehler's column on the recent Diebolding of Ohio election reform initiatives, which got flipped from a pre-election prediction of a 60/40 win, to a 60/40 election day LOSS (!)--the most audacious vote flipping yet!

16. MANY other countries hand count their ballots -- Even MAINE hand counts
~80% of their ballots.

And Canada hand counted all of their ballots within 4 hours.
Stories for both Canada and Maine can be found at:
http://www.ecotalk.org/VotingMachines-LegalVoting.htm

According to DU's rooboy, Australia hand countied all of theirs within 5 hours:
