Letter brings back military memoriesBetty Jones correctly points out President Bush' record in the National Guard and his sorry performance ("Bush's real record in National Guard," Nov. 25).
She mentions that he joined the Texas National Guard in May 1968. My mind raced back in time and I remembered that I was on my second tour in Vietnam, fighting in the infamous A Shau Valley (which we called the "valley of the shadow of death" as it became an air crew graveyard).
She also mentioned Bush's failure to get a flight physical in 1972. Of all the lies Bush has told, this has to be one of the most blatant. He said a flight surgeon wasn't available. In 1972, I was an Army pilot in a non-flying status attending college in Omaha, Neb. I had no problems getting a flight physical at the local Air Force base.
I think there is a possibility that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney both suffered from back problems when they were trying to avoid service in Vietnam. The problem was a big yellow streak running down the back.
I am not anti-National Guard. I was in the Texas National Guard from 1955 until 1962 and can't recall missing a single drill.
