1. Sitting here watching the director's cut of 1776
And it struck me how timely it is - and that we're dealing with all the same problems.

3. It's what Jefferson advocated.
And Tucker Carlson can say what he wants, but I absolutely, positively CANNOT endure another 8 years of Repukelican sociopathic insanity. IMO, the anger in America is simply too great to support their re-election. Diebold can kiss my * - their theft has to at least appear to be legit for them to get away with stealing elections, and I don't think they're going to even come close.

5. I Posted this at another site
in response to some freeper type posts about "libruls"
being such traitors. It got me to thinking about 1776.

**********

Why did conservatives hate freedom in 1776?
Why did they hate the very idea of a free America?
Why are they still trying to destroy America?

In early 1776 Americans were on the verge of declaring Independence from England
Citizens loyal to King George were called "Tories" They were the conservative political types of their time.
These conservatives, these Tories, were against the American Revolution. They did not want America to be a free country. They wanted to be ruled by King George. They were more loyal to an out of touch Monarch across the Atlantic than they were to the majority of citizens in their native country; America.

During the War of Independence the conservatives were greatly out-numbered by Patriots.
Since direct action (armed conflict) was usually out of the question, the conservative Tories operated in the background and relied more on covert operations. One such "op" was spreading propaganda and false news.

As fighting between Patriots and the Redcoats spilled over into Canada, conservative Tories were busy spreading fear and propaganda among the Canadian populace.

The following report to Congress, (from a Library of Congress web site), clearly shows how the conservatives used religious leaders and landed gentry (rich people) to spread misinformation.

******************

From the Library of Congress
http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/timeline/amrev/homefrnt/tories.html
Tories Spread Falsehoods In Canada, February 1776

"Patriot leaders discovered that loyalists (also called Tories) created no end of problems with which they had to deal.

He says that when the Canadians first heard of the Dispute (Our War of Independence) they were generally on the American side; but that by the Influence of the Clergy and the Noblesse, who have been continually preaching and persuading them against us, they are now brought into a State of Suspence or Uncertainty which Side to follow.
That Papers printed by the Tories at New York have been read to them by the Priests, assuring them that our Design was to deprive them of their Religion as well as their Possessions. That the Letters we have address'd to them have made little Impression, the common People being generally unable to read, and the Priests and Gentry who read them to others, explain them in such a Manner as best answers their own purpose of prejudicing the People against us."

*****************

Today, Patriots are faced with the same kind of media misinformation. As the dumbing down of America continues, the uneducated, the under educated and other simple minded citizens continue to fall victim to the SAME kind of propaganda and outright lies. In 230+ years you would think they might have found a clue along the way.

The obvious disconnect in their critical thinking skills is amazing. As *bush lied repeatedly in the run up to invading Iraq, conservative chickenhawks and their followers, rabid with war fever, were demanding we nuke Iraq and kill all the "towel-heads and sand n*****s. NOW, yesterdays sworn enemy, has become a "Noble Cause" worth more than our childrens future. Their country and their need to be "democratized" is worth bankrupting America...just to prove King George is not a moron.

So, to all you clueless cons reading this (and you know who you are):
You are true victims of conservatism. We progressives just suffer the collateral damage your ignorance causes.
You now see politics as a "team sport" in it's most hateful form. Like "football" hooligans overseas, you transform team loyalty into ugly, hateful speech riots. Even as you don't have enough balls to "play ball" with the big dogs, cheerleading for the "team" lets you feel like you are a part of it. It makes you feel like you belong. If your team "wins", you can the bask in that reflected glory and feel like a winner yourself. Something you can't seem to do on your own.

I'd suggest you Trolls and Freepers put your on line time to better use and get an education rather than believing what O'Loufa, OxyFlush and the other modern day propagandists tell you. Even better, grab a hammer and go find an auto accident. When you see a victim all bloodied and maimed, hit yourself in the head a few times, claw end first. If you are lucky, you just might understand something called empathy. It's what seperates progressive humans who value all life from people who can only think, or care, about themselves.

6. I compare the conservatives to Torries also except for one thing
The Torries had at least somewhat of a plausible argument for their stance in terms of governance their motto was "Why be ruled by a thousand tyrants here than one tyrant a thousand miles away"

Today's Torries say "If you aren't rich and Christian get behind that fence RIGHT NOW you disloyal subject"

7. Superb post - absolutely right
Recently, we've seen the far-right working covertly with the Tories in Canada. Now I wonder whose interests they are serving? Certainly not ours.

8. I agree; but two minor points
Remember the 'Tories' still exist - the Conservative Party in the UK are still called the Tories.

Also, it was not an overhwhelming majority of Americans in 1776 who supported the rebellion against the Crown. Most scholars think it was about 2/3 for, 1/3 against the Revolution.

And, I recommend that everyone interested in American history (which should be everyone, IMHO! haha) read Howard Zinn's 'A People's History of the United States'. The 'Founding Fathers' were not nearly so noble as our old elementary school textbooks would have us believe; and not just on the slavery issue. Oligarchs have been in control here since the beginning - just different oligarchs than back in the Old Country.

Great thread.

I protested outside the Texas Governor's Mansion in November 2000, along with about 10 friends, in colonial garb (me, being female) and Revolutionary American military costumes (the men), holding a sign that read: 'George III was better than George W', and singing the Star Spangled Banner. We walked around it for a few hours until our voices went out. I know he was home that night, along with Laura, I think they must've heard our wild singing. We even made Mexican TV. It was beautiful.
