Why is it un-American to be a peacenik?
I'm asking honestly. How does believing in Peace become something to be vilified? Why can't American become the next Hague? Why can't we lead the world in disarmament? McCain said this morning that EVERYTHING is now on the table including SS & Medicare. We will be paying taxes in the next decade for proliferation and nothing more. Our education system sucks, money for higher education is nil, forget protecting our environment, supporting the arts are for wieners. Do we REALLY want to live in a country that stands for nothing more than military might?

1. Ignorance
That is what is sweeping America off it's feet. Sad...

"Bumper sticker solutions" as I like to call it.

2. Honestly
Because people are conditioned to think that peaceful/pacifist=weak. I don't think we've gotten away from our animal nature as much as we think we have unfortunately.

Just look at the world around you. The only way you can get someone's respect is to brutalize them or act like an arsehole. No one will respect you if you're a nice guy who talks about saving the environment, respecting the rights and bodies of women, taking the high road on issues (real moral clarity), believing in health care for all, etc.

450 Billion in defense spending??

9. We obviously wouldn't
How can we find out how many of our citizens are in some way earning a living in the military, arms/weapons/bio-chem building and after market? The BONUS is Halliburton would be gone!

11. Not sure but I don't think it is more than 1-2%
or about 2-4 million people.

6. I wouldn't want America to be the next Hague.
Too many Americans are still bigoted and that bigotry would color anything that we would attempt to do on an international venue.

As for peace being unAmerican, it's the war hawks, particularly the chickenhawks, who are unAmerican and unpatriotic IMHO.

7. Maybe we'd be better off...
Thinking of ourselves as citizens of the world who happen to live in the United States. All that nationalism and chauvinism breeds pro-war, pro-military machine sentiment. It's harder to want to blow up another country when you feel connected to it.

10. Only the right wing can be violent
Believe me, as someone who isn't a pacifist, the right wing only wants to excuse violence when it's directed at their enemies.

When physical force is directed at them, they are quick to condemn it and run to law enforcement.

One of my friends went onto a right wing radio program that was being held on campus and began talking over the rightwing host and stood up and hovered over him, pointing right in his face.

The right wing radio host began shouting that he was being attacked when no one laid a finger on him.
