How Bush tried to take military contol of LA.
and since Blanco wouldn't back down and give up control of her state, how Bush continued to punish the people in whatever way he could.

December 04, 2005

Baton Rouge, La.- President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco could not agree on key aspects of who would be in charge of military forces in the response to Hurricane Katrina, a crippling breakdown in relations with the White House that affected the rescue, peacekeeping and support effort during the week after the storm, according to information released by the state.

The two sides still can't agree on what was said during that time as the dialogue over military deployments unfolded.

Louisiana National Guard troops were being joined by guardsmen from other states during the critical days after the storm, all under the Democratic governor's control. Blanco was requesting federal troops from the Republican president, who kept control of those forces once they were deployed in New Orleans a week after Katrina hit.

<snip>

During that week, Blanco and Bush officials debated back and forth whether Honore would step in and "federalize" the guardsmen under his control, with Bush's blessing. But Blanco never agreed to that arrangement, which on Sept. 2 was put to her in the form of a memorandum of understanding the White House requested her to sign.

1. Tried? Seems like they succeeded to me.
National Guard troops have locked down entire "unsafe" neighborhoods so they can condemn the houses within. Military has done nothing to resore the power and water grid (sound familiar)? so people would be tempted to come back of their own accord. Checkpoints exist on the roads where black people are singled out and "advised" not to re-enter the state of Louisiana for the health of their children. Reporters for major dailies talk about how it's worth it to lose all your loved ones if it gives an impoverished African American the chance to live somewhere anywhere other than New Orleans, where everyone knows poor blacks just can't seem to get by.

And now, the state and feds are conspiring to take over the mortgages of all the houses in the "most damaged areas" so they can condemn them and give residents (the ones with a good credit rating, of course) the "option" to buy comparable land somewhere safer "for the children".

And the Washington Post says all this ("doing something" about the problem of poor people wanting to return to below-sea-level areas -- the areas that were reserved for their families for generations) should be conditional before the Feds agree to repair the levees (the ones people knew were under-funded for generations).

2. This was their first attempt at domestic control via military force.
Worked in Iraq (got away with it), so now it is our turn. Who better to experiment on then the poor and powerless.

So how is NOLA nowadays? Sure don't hear about it from the MSM.
