If you hate Jerry Falwell now, watch the movie The Eyes of Tammy Faye
If you've not seen it, you really should. I always thought she was horrible but she isn't half as bad as Falwell and his crowd.

Has anyone seen the movie? I find it hard to believe that its propaganda but I ended up finding Tammy quite likable. There is a scene in the movie where Falwell totally screws Tammy and Jim on TV that is breath taking. Even if Tammy's story is untrue, what Falwell did could NEVER be considered Christian.

Rent it.

(Sorry to post this here but I don't see a movie forum/topic. sheesh, seems we should have one.)

1. I totally agree
I was completely sympathetic to Tammy Faye after watching the movie. Flamboyant, a little nutty...yes...but seems very sincere.

And yes, Falwell is vile.

2. Yeah, I saw it.
I actually got a greater appreciation for Jim and Tammy from watching it too, aside from getting in all that trouble with money.

I was impressed. She cannot be kept down. I would like to see that movie.

Jerry Falwell.. well, I hope he's right about hell. Because he'll be there.

5. Tammy was on VH1? A year or so ago, I think the show was
"surreal World" or something - anyway, she was adorable, really sweet and loving and honest about where she's at - my idea of a "true Christian".

6. I saw that too
and she seems like a real sweetheart. I think the Bakers really got screwed by Fallwell, he wanted their ministry.

9. Correct
I admit I was happily surprised by how Mrs. Messner (her current name) came across. The amazing things were (1) she expressed unequivocal support of gays and lesbians when the housemates visited a gay bar (she may not like the conduct, but she treated them like human beings) and (2) one of her housemates was porn star Ron Jeremy, and the two of them hit it off like brother and sister, each respectful of the other's chosen life.

The one part I was disappointed was when the housemates went to a nudist camp and Tammy refused to go in. The impression I got is that she still equates nudity with sex, which is unfortunate.

All in all, the Messners are welcome for dinner at my house any time.

10. Yes, wasn't Ron great? What an unexpectedly cool, funny guy -
you know, you said the magic word: respect. "Do unto others"..so simple, isn't it?
Well, don't forget to include Ron in your dinner invite!

11. Good point
Come to think of it, my wife and I continually noticed during that series that the "veteran" folks (Messner, Jeremy, Erik Estrada and Ron(? "Vanilla Ice") Van Winkle) were so much more interesting than the young folks, who were more interested in getting wasted.

So let's make it official--Tammy, Ron, Erik and Rob, if you're reading this, feel free to PM me and set up a dinner date . . .

15. Maybe that wasn't the case
Maybe she was just uncomfortable with it. I know I am and I'm also really shy with my body. Some people just aren't comfortable with it. I'm still really iffy with her personally but that's just my opinion about that particular thing (the nudist thing). It's just not everybody's cup of tea. Doesn't mean they think of it as bad necessarily.

17. Another good point
And I considered that as well. It's been a while since the program was on, so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I recall some footage of her praying to herself outside while the other housemates were in the compound, which struck me more as a "lead us not into temptation" thing rather than just discomfort.

PS My experience has always been that the best way to develop body confidence is to visit an actual nude beach -- you'd be amazed how beautiful a less-than-perfect non-airbrushed human body can be, and it's also amazing how much no one there cares how you look.

My two cents, use it as you will.

14. I believe it was sometime last year
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 11:00 PM by FreedomAngel82
I saw an interview on Larry King with the girl who had the whole affair with her husband. From what she said Faye seemed like a totally different person from what all happened and it didn't put her in a good light. Sorry but I just don't trust any of these people. (And before you accuse me of Christian bashing I am a Christian so please give me a break)

7. Great movie! Tammy was an 'inocent' who got figurativly screwed by
Falwell. She is quite charming in her honesty. I got it thru Netflix.

8. She does come across as surprisingly likeable in the film
My take is that both Jim and Tammy started off as well-intentioned, but naive, individuals. Jim then became actively corrupt, and Tammy Faye found herself caught up in it.
Falwell is a loathsome dirtbag.

13. I personally get mixed feelings with her
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 10:58 PM by FreedomAngel82
I remember watching a movie about what all happened with them and the husband having the affair and she stud up for him instead of the truth. I'd never forgive that as a woman myself. She's just as bad with that regards in my opinion. Typical "stand by your man no matter what" type of woman. *sigh* Falwell screws everybody. He's only about himself. Even people who are supposed to be his friends and all that I'm sure he screws.

20. Hillary stood by her man too
so I can't condemn Tammy for it. In the end Jim and Tammy got divorced so first reactions often don't tell the real tale.

21. why is "standing by your man" a bad thing?
if I found out my husband slept with a playboy bunny once 9 years ago there is no way I would dump him. He's part of my family and a marriage is about so much more than sex.

My husband will always be there for me. I don't see how giving that up because he had one night stand with a floozy is a good deal.

16. I haven't seen that, but I came to truly like Tammy on the Surreal Life.
She was great. Funny and surprisingly committed, but not in a pushy or prude way.

19. I saw the movie a while ago and also was totally impressed and
endeared to her. I've seen her on Larry King and she seems like a genuinely sweet person. After the movie, my entire perspective about her and their situation totally changed. Jerry Falwell...how does he POSSIBLY reconcile what he does with being a man of God..How????????
