Time's "Person of the Year" nominees. You've gotta be effin' KIDDING me.

http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/2005/walkup/index.html?cnn=yes

Who Should Be Person of the Year?
TIME's Person of the Year is the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year. Who do you think fits the bill this year?

Steve Jobs
Pope Benedict XVI
Bill and Melinda Gates
The Google Guys
J.K. Rowling
Rick Warren
Condoleezza Rice
Valerie Plame
Bono
Mother Nature
George W. Bush
Lance Armstrong

I'd like to nominate President Cakesucker...but ONLY if they call him "President Cakesucker" on the cover.

2. It should go to Bush again, imho
I mean, if the parameters are somebody who most affected our lives, then out of that list, it should most definitely be GWB. Others who made man of the year include people such as Joseph Stalin.

4. I'd like to see it go to Bush with the guitar and cakesucking pics...
...because this year, Nero REALLY fiddled while Rome burned. And yeah, strictly adhering to the criteria used by Time, Bush is the hands-down winner.

11. Pol Pot. Stalin. Yeah.
Positive effect, indeed.

They've been giving that title to horrible people for decades. I've disagreed with their choices before, but not because they gave it to someone "bad." (For instance: They should have given it to Osama Bin Laden, not Guiliani, in 2001, because without Osama, Guiliani wouldn't have had any impact outside New York at all.)

Hitler has also been a "Man of the Year". It has NEVER been an award for the greatest positive impact. It has ALWAYS been a recognition of who has had the greatest impact - for good or bad.

12. Jack Abramoff deserves the nod.
He was the most criminal component of the most criminal Presidency in the history of the United States.

Here in a few years, when the elections are called off and we are all virtual slaves, a whole lot of us are going to be asking ourselves, "how did this happen"? And the answer will be, as it has always been, "follow the money, stupid."

Jack's in charge of the money.

who the fuck cares. They've pick total fuck ups before, why change now. Remember this is "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives".
In 2001 - It should have been OBL
In 2003 - It should have been GWB for starting an illegal war
In 2005 - It might as well be GWB for having the gall to unveil his plan for Victory in Iraq (2.5 years after getting us into an illegal war).

I honestly think it should go to John Paul (I could care less about him too).

Cheers

27. TIME's POTY has become a joke
Look at this list: Time's Person of the Year, 1927-2004

The last person they've given the title to that I would consider "controversial" (like Hitler, as the defenders of TIME would say) would be Deng Xiaoping. Before that, the Ayatollah. Either way, that was at least 20 years ago.

Ever since 2001, TIME has shown it values subscriptions more than the actual choice. How in the hell did Rudy G. have a greater impact on the world, "for good or for ill" more than Osama bin Laden in 2001? No, TIME showed us they were afraid of losing subscriptions more than anything and took the easy way out by giving it to Rudy in 2001.

37. Totally agree
the cover is supposed to go to the person who had the most impact during the year. TIME has gone yellow, like too much of our country. Edward R. Murrow would not believe what has profession has become. A bunch of cowards who lick the boots of their corporate masters.
Where are the people with fortitude and dignity?
You're completely correct.

47. "Murrow Turning Over in his Grave"
Thank you for mentioning Edward R. Murrow. It gives me an excuse to post these lyrics from Fleetwood Mac. (Lyrics by Lindsey Buckingham)

All the sainted sinners
They pay handsomely
M S C A E they make the weapons
And they run the prisons
And they sell the justice
'Cause being guilty is just good business
Well we're standing out on the borderline
Ain’t no one here gonna stop it now

Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave (Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild
Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave (Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild

Half-closed eyes and unconscious death
Do you feel the ooze as your brain drains out
From the pneumatic drills and sharpened knives?
Blood in the sky are you dead or alive?
All the restless people and the bitter green
Well, it takes the gold makes the spirit mean

Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave (Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild
Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave (Murrow’s turnin’ over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild

Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 09:30 PM by freethought
Let's look at this way. I don't believe for a single second that TIME is nominating him of the basis of all the "great things" he's accomplished.
Let's see:
an unnessecary war based totally on lies, still ongoing
managed to piss off just about every other country on the planet (including our closest allies)
massive defecits as far as the eye can see
sickening cronyism
Compassion? Yeah, right!
Loss of scientific and technological edge
Rampant political and cultural polarization(not totally his doing)

Need I go on?

Look, anyone who can screw things up this badly, in so little time, and still somehow be proud of himself, deserves to be "person of the year".
