Delray Beach · He may have a presidency under his belt, and two sons to guarantee his family's imprint on history, but George Herbert Walker Bush is not resting on his laurels.
He still aspires to win the occasional tennis match.
The former president, 81, managed that feat Sunday as a guest player at the Chris Evert/Bank of America Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic, which began Dec. 1 with a media event. In association with the Chris Evert Children's Hospital at Broward General Medical Center, the 16-year-old event at the Delray Beach Tennis Center raised $1.2 million to support programs for at-risk children. The event has raised more than $14 million in its history.
Wearing a white baseball cap and keeping his eye on the slow-moving ball, Bush participated in a doubles match alongside Chris Evert, 50. They played against tennis pro Lindsay Davenport and Christian pop singer Michael W. Smith, known for mega-selling worship albums with titles such as This Is Your Time and I'll Lead You Home. Smith has also served as co-chairman of the honorary committee of the Presidential Prayer Team, an Internet ministry that urges daily prayer for the president and the armed forces.
There was little competition but plenty of jocular humor at the charity event.
