WTF: WH releasing thousands of docs on Wilson & Plame! Right.
We don't need no stinking Special Counsel! They age providing Ashcroft with everything they can. The pResident wants to get to the bottom of this, although it's very possible the leakers will never be found. And Ashcroft just may excuse himself. Sure.

Thanks. For. Nothing.

BTW, hear the one about Prescott Bush? Well, we at DU have a long time ago. Now its time for the media to get on it.

Time to get that CIA Wurlitzer going again.

Ashcroft Says His Investigators Have Made Gains in Leak Case
By ERIC LICHTBLAU

Published: October 17, 2003

ASHINGTON, Oct. 16 — Under pressure over his handling of the investigation into the disclosure of an undercover C.I.A. officer's identity, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Thursday that investigators had made good progress but that he had not ruled out removing himself from the case.

Mr. Ashcroft also left open the possibility of appointing a special counsel to take over the case and of approving subpoenas to reporters in order to find the source of the leak. "I have not foreclosed any options in this matter," he said.

With the investigation now ending its third week, Mr. Ashcroft said: "I believe that we have been making progress that's valuable in this matter. And we will devote every energy that's available, and every resource that's available at the highest level of intensity."

The White House counsel, Alberto R. Gonzales, in a letter dated Wednesday to two Democratic senators, Charles E. Schumer of New York and Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, said the administration had worked to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

Mr. Gonzales said White House officials "have already forwarded on a rolling basis thousands of pages of documents" to the Justice Department in response to investigators' request for relevant records on Mr. Wilson and his wife, Valerie Plame.

1. If Ashcroft would get the....
Phone bills, entry list to WH and the doodles from the Wh I know he could find the leaks. We our self with slide show and c-span saw the great things that can be done with doodles. Put the FBI on to these things. I am willing to bet they have a section in FBI and CIA that reads and understands doodles. And the general public knows what it means to use Telephone and are on it up to say 15 minutes, what you can do in that space of time is unbleivable.

3. Something just occurred to me
I wonder if the CIA hasn't released more damaging stuff regarding Traitorgate because they're waiting to see what Ashcroft does. If the investigation does expose the culprit(s), then the CIA won't have to do it. But if he whitewashes it, they'll have to take matters into their own hands.

11. A REAL investigation doesn't let the suspect set the parameters
No we haven't seen the FBI play any cards yet. The WH is setting up the "Hey we gave them all this stuff and now they are on a witchhunt" defense.

At some point the FBI will come out (I hope) and say "okay we need access to the White House to determine what WE think is relevant". Of course Rove will sell it as overzealous and a political witchhunt AND.......wait for it....................cite the need for national security.

I can see this coming from, well, July.

18. Absolutely
I think the CIA's public request for a DOJ investigation was supposed to put the WH on alert: we know what you did; what are you going to do about it?

If the WH thinks they're fooling the CIA with this paper shuffling, their heads are up their asses. They still think the only one they need to fool is the American people, and they're sure the CIA will just roll over and take it the way Tenet did over the 16 words.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we're about to witness the royal fucking of Bush by the CIA.

2. okay. why 'thousands of pages' of docs on the wilsons?
this makes no sense at all to me. there should not be 'thousands' of docs related to this specific investigation, unless they are simply turning over all of the historical records of wilson's diplomatic career in order to claim they are cooperating.

4. The WH has a thousand or more employees
assuming each has 2 pages of phone logs covering the dates in question that would be thousands of pages.

9. It's the cover up
that will hang them. You can bet the CIA already has copies of the damning evidence. :D

12. They are trying to drown them in paper
Remeber Saddam's 12,000 page "disclosure"? Same thing.

The reason everyone originally thought Rove was at least involved is because of the secretive nature of this administration. No one is allowed to talk to the press, save for Dick-Libby-Condi*. There are no "leaks" in this White House it is all planned.

They don't use focus groups to the extent they do (never seen before) for no reason.

*-see what happened to the guy who penned "Axis of Evil" for the SOTU speech when his wife sent out an e-mail to her friends. He was promptly canned.

5. Key here to me that asscrack isn't doing anything more than lip service ..
<snip>
"I believe that we have been making progress that's valuable in this matter. And we will devote every energy that's available, and every resource that's available at the highest level of intensity."
<snip>

Add that to the REAMS of paper submitted, IMO, that are irrevelant in all likely-hood to keep SOMEONE busy and focused on PAPER rather than the issue.

I don't belive this for one moment. They've proven they are liars, so why should I even TRY to assume that he is speaking anything vaguely close to the truth here? NOT! :spank:

6. Thousands of pages of documents that have been thouroughly
gone through for any incriminating evidence and by golly no one did anything wrong. So you can now look at the documents and see we were right all along. We will be giving you more documents as soon as we've thouroughly checked each and every one. Nothing wrong with the suspect purifying documents is there? We want to be ever so helpful.

7. And you know the darn thing about this?
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 12:04 PM by jumptheshadow
Rove, Cheney and their top managers already KNOW who did the leaking. If any decent leader gives more than one minute's worth of thought to the subject, they could probably come up with a short list of suspects fairly quickly. If the executives running Bushco were true patriots the leakers would have been culled out of the administration months ago.

8. Leaks and revenge: It smells more like Watergate every day.
leaks, obsessive view of information as property, a yearning desire to silence critics......it's uncanny if you think of it.
Bush is from the same ethical lineage as Nixon....but he learned nothing from his seeming mentor's collapse...

13. Narcissistic Freaks Can't Learn THEY ONLY KNOW WHAT THEY KNOW
As in their own superior sense of self. Trust me I have one of these fuckers in my life and for the longest time I kept asking myself why is he repeating behaviors that hurt him.

Then one day DING DONG it occured to me he wasn't hurting himself at all (yes there was a bit of yelling and name calling and he cried when he was caught lying but I was the one who had the legitimate emotion) this bastard was hurting ME.

Narcissists can't learn. They are hard wired into their own fucking crazy belief system.

They lack empathy and hence they just don't give a fucking shit.

Bush will go down and hard. Too many fucking lies just can't withstand the tide.

The best way to unnerve a narcissist is to hammer home the truth.

They can't handle the pain. Cowards each and every one.

14. A little stalling going on
It seems to me that the doj, and the wh are dragging their little feetsies until they have figured out their strategy. I especially think it is mighty interesting that Ashcroft hasn't ruled out the possibility of an independent counsel. That'd get him off the hot seat, and he could appoint some buddy of the bfee. Probably somebody not too well known.

15. What's going on with this "leak investigation"? - not on front pages
Is this another one that got away? To the casual observer the unmasking of the CIA operative by the White House is old news - like Enron, WMD, etc...
