Surreal Telephone polling call I just received
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 09:38 PM by bbinacan
It was all automated but it took me a minute to catch on. They asked to speak to the "lady of the house" and I said there was none. They asked if they could speak to the "man of the house". I answered you got him. That's when it got curious. It (by now I think it's an it and not a human) but I give it another minute. It asks a leading question about family values as portrayed in Hollywood. It didn't know how to respond to my answer and said, "OK, let's try this question..." I hung up. It freaked me out. WTF? Has anyone else gotten such a bizarre call?:scared:

EDIT. I checked my caller ID and called them. They said they were a charity and asked if I had children or grandchildren. I said no and they said they would remove me from their list. See what they are about. Censorship. http://www.dove.org/Frames.asp?URL=partners/families.htm

2. Sounds like those voice activated things you get . . .
. . . nowadays when you call for service. "OKay, now state your name clearly . . . If you're calling for repair, say 'Repair' . . . I'm sorry, I didn't understand you, if you're calling for repair . . . "

It's creepy.

5. That's exactly what it was but
it was way too good. Blew my mind. For a minute, I thought it was human. Never happened to me before. Just freaky.

7. wonder if they tape the responses
if so - I think I would find a place to respond: I am terribly concerned about human polling jobs being shipped out to automated response programs.

9. Of course they do!
I was involved with a large call center which handled about 100K calls a month. Recorded every single one & that was five years ago.

8. I had to deal with an airline with that system. Say "Agent"
over and over again until they transfer you to the nice lady in Bangalore.

10. I had one a few weeks ago
Trying to sell me something, I think. It was an asian-sounding woman who clearly didn't understand much english, but was reading out questions (quite well, as it happens) and trying to fit my replies into her pre-set possible answers. Poor thing didn't stand a chance with my heavy northern-english accent. Especially after a good lunch...

14. It's a RW fundie organization
"Dove" is one of those religious code words; means descending holy spirit, or something. Take a look at their board of directors and advisors.

20. Well also the symbol of the dove
is also considered for "peace" and Noah used the dove to send out to find a fig leaf to see if the water was down after the ship.

17. It's a false front for a right-wing telemarketer
They use the "charitable" Dove Foundation as a front to evade the no-call laws by posing as a "survey" on social issues to build a list of families with small children. Those on the list then receive sales materials from a for-profit company owned by the same husband and wife who are the top two officers of the "non-profit" Dove Foundation.

The caller is actually human, but he's not allowed to speak, only to select which pre-recorded questions and answers to play back, so it's not automated voice recognition but the replies are canned.

19. I read on another message board
that there was some "Christian right" group that was going around as a charity and asking people to answer some question's and press on their keypad numbers for different options and what happens is when you press one you change your long distance phone plan. Is this it? Has anyone else heard of this?
