So... I got laid off today....

4 years of my life they got. When I walked into that office there were two desks, one computer and pile of cardboard out back.

I ran that place BY MYSELF for a YEAR! Two million dollars on the books when I was running it!
Today there were 12 employees (until 11am, then there were 9) They made me lay off my drivers, then they canned me!
Two weeks severence pay and... see ya! The bottom line is what counts ya know?

Three weeks before Christmas! How do ya like that!!??

Should I be bawling or just really pissed off?!!??

I need a hug.

7. Hugs coming your way...
   I know they won't make up for what you've lost, though. There is absolutely no loyalty toward employees anymore. They expect dedication, loyalty, and sacrifice from their employees, but give none in return.

I hope your situation improves right away. Remember, it's not due to any failure on your part, it's just part of the "compassionate conservatism" being shoved down our throats by Repukes.

51. Don't hate the player, hate the game
It sucks, and I hate to say it, but that is way the laws are currently written.

Get government to put people first, and companies will follow suit.

1) get rid of the payroll tax, raise the revenue from the income tax.
2) get rid of the income tax against wages
3) get rid of the income tax against capital
4) get the government to create money instead of the fed
5) raise tax revenue from income to land and license, not income due to productivity.

Full employment, Budget surpluses.

63. Instead - they want to get rid of Capital Gains Tax!!
Kudlow is always talking about how awful Capital Gains tax is on CNBC.

I feel for you - companies today totally lack heart, or any feeling for people. But companies are people - managers, co-workers, etc. It has gotten really ugly and dog eat dog and looking out for #1 out there. Ugly!!

92. So slave wages and exploding healthcare insurance costs are not part of it
At least if we used our tax dollars wisely for healthcare and a government that concentrated on workers issues, we'd get some results. But the RW notion that it's only taxes that are preventing companies from employing more people seems like only part of the problem.

Do you have numbers to support removing all these taxes from corporations? Do you realize that corporate taxes are already the lowest they've been in 50 years? Is your plan the Bush plan?

for asshole bosses to lay off employees. Just three days before Christmas 1999, three managers got shitcanned from the restaurant I was working at. I got shitcanned the year before from the ice cream shop I was managing on Dec. 18th.

It's almost like the evil overlords are making DAMN sure we know who's "boss" by twisting the knife embedded in our hearts at exactly the wrong time.

On edit: Oh yeah, I'm sorry about this. It sucks.

The way things are going, the sooner you get in line for your benefits, the better. Spend a few days assessing and chilling out, and then put your best foot forward, get out there and start doing that job search thing.

Sorry to hear that...one of my relatives got the axe a few weeks ago, too.

So much for this great economy--that is the fifth layoff I have heard about in the last few days.

This has happened to me before.

Right before I got the BEST, most important job of my life ... as a social worker. If I hadn't parted ways with that employer .. I wouldn't have been a social worker; then, I wouldn't have learned about adoption or been selected for my daughter. Then, I wouldn't be looking at my beautiful kid right now!

Anyway, you get my point ... it sucks now, but in the long run, it will be for the best!

22. Do Not Pass Go...File For Unemployment ASAP
My sincere deepest regrets. I've been there...facing holidays with young mouths to feed, no income and my professional life in a shambles. Instead of sitting around, I went and spent a lovely afternoon at the unemployment office. Nothing made me forget about what happened and how I wanted to get back into the workforce and kick some ass than 4 or 6 hours of sitting around an office and having to deal with case workers.

Bottom line is find something to do. Volunteer, take a class, go to job fairs...find something to do every day to keep you from feeling sorry about your situation. It also can open up doors to the next job.

Good luck and here's wishing you a quick recovery and for better than what you had before.

Peace...

you'll be able to draw at least a little money through this holiday season. I've been there and so has my husband. Just be honest with all on your Christmas list (family, friends, neighbors) that you've been separated from your job and things are tough for you right now. You need some understanding and help.

If you are unaccustomed to pre-owned or thrifty shopping, get acquainted with it now. Here in Portland, there are Goodwill, Value Village, and Salvation Army stores that sell "pre-owned" goodies, don't hesitate. They get so many good values there, including NEW items with tags still on.

If you have kids in school, call the school administration and get them on free lunches -- if you qualify.

My husband and I have each had three careers in business. We're now retired -- not rich, but enjoying it. We like to say, "The real career is LIVING!"

Have a happy, healthy, and hearty holiday. I will be volunteering on Christmas day at the Good Neighbor Center, a half-way house in Tigard, Oregon, bringing used toys and free food to adults and children who are moving from homelessness to an apartment.

It's always a great day when those kids smile and laugh!

PM me if you need ANYTHING -- I just remembered you're here in Portland, OR!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

52. Sounds Like We Both Share Radio War Stories...
I was fired from a talk radio gig...despite high ratings, just before xmas. Bottom line was my contract had been breached and I was giving management grief. Despite coming into a bad situation and making things a lot better (ratings doubled...ad inventory was never stronger), I was told how terrible I sounded on the air, how I was offending listeners (being that "librul") and that they were constantly getting complaints. It took going to court to prove it was all lies...they just wanted the "librul" off the air. Not a fun time...especially when I had a 3 and 1 year old at home.

My mother would say every knock is a boost. You're not fired after that long of a time because you did a bad job...you did it too well and they couldn't afford you. My solace is that almost every former employer who either screwed me around and/or fired me, either is no longer in business themselves or have never seen the numbers or revenues when I was there. Kharma is not a bad thing.

Cheers...

I'll PM you the rest of the details. My husband and I have both had several careers, but we're now retired. I volunteer at the local PBS station, host and produce a weekly talk show (no call-ins or breaks) mostly about books and movies.

To repeat: Bush's America. He is a corporate globalist so he's immune from your feelings and experience. He and Babs and dad, Laura, Neil, Jeb, the twins, and all the rest are totally protected from the loss of American jobs. Their profits are coming from global profits. They could care less about American jobs.

64. I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with you.
When bad things happen, it has been considered good manners for centuries to express condolences. When the pain is fresh, people want (and deserve) sympathy. They need validation that what happened was terrible. Then - after they have been totally "in the moment" and experienced the pain, they can move on and figure - hey maybe this was a good thing and I will recover. But the sadness is a necessary part of the process.

My brother is always about not being sad, not thinking negative, moving on after each set back and not looking back. Maybe that is why he is a crack-head who can't hold down a job and won't support his children. Great guy to be around though - everyone loves him - he's so upbeat and POSITIVE!!

Have you considered that he has proven his integrity and never given anyone reason to doubt his credibility?

If you ever lose your job, I hope your "friends" offer you comfort and compassion first and don't immediately jump to the conclusion that you were somehow at fault for your own demise and pepper you with questions about what you did to get fired and sympathize with the company for abruptly fired you.

84. I strongly disagree.
"Those in camp #1 are not your friends. I'm sure you're aware of this already."

People NEED validation of their feelings. They need to hear others say, "I've been there too, and yes, it sucks."

People need to bitch, gripe, be angry for a while. But NOT to stay stuck there. Bitch, gripe, be angry, and then move on.

94. One of the great ironies I've seen, every management curriculum
talks about just this topic, employees are your greatest asset, MBWA, responsibility motivates more than money, blah, blah, blah... yet it is not practiced once they get out of school.

37. Crap that sucks
and I know how you feel. There's a lot of good advice and good hugs already here. I would only add that you're probably (very slightly) in shock right now, so take care of yourself. File for unemployment first, then take a little time to relax and let the new situation sink in. It could be a blessing in disguise in the long run. Be pissed! MAKE all your Christmas cards and presents, and DON'T spend holiday money you don't have (people WILL understand). Sounds like you have some damn good skills and can probably turn this to your favor when you're ready to get back out there.

41. you obviously can do anything you set your mind to
With a resume like that, you clearly kick ass.

The timing sucks, and for the moment the situation sucks, but you WILL look back on this and say "Damn, I'm glad I'm not there any more, or I would never have found my dream job and met these wonderful people and be making this wonderful salary." This stinks now but it WILL turn out to be a good thing.

Not to give the economy undeserved props, but things are much better than they were a while ago. Four years ago you'd have every reason to be crying in your beer... now you have every reason to be optimistic, especially with the skills you so obviously have.

:grouphug:

Spend a few minutes several times a day imagining yourself in your dream job, feeling great about the work you do, enjoying being around the people there, really feeling satisfied with your position. Feel the feelings as if this were all already your reality, and it WILL be.

We could afford very little for anything ... I borrowed for a meager xmas for the kids .... Even WITH a decent job this year: xmas looks pretty damned grim ....

I cannot imagine going through it again .... I am so sorry B ... truly ..... If there is anything I can do, I will ....

59. Best of luck to you in your next, even better job.
My wife was laid off with little fanfare this spring. "We don't need you anymore."

She was working for a local free newspaper. Within 2 months it had gone under, so at least she got a little schadenfreude.

Undoubtedly you've got great things to offer an employer, or maybe the opportunity for a business venture of your own will present itself.

Anyway, regardless of how things may seem stacked against you in Bush's America, never doubt for a minute that you CAN DO it.

at least they could have waited until after the 1st.

My wife got "let go" for talking to ME!! too much on the phone...

I called once or twice a day, never longer then 2-3 min at a time.
She had been with that company FIFTEEN YEARS!.
She filed for UE and they where, like, "You where there HOW LONG and made only THAT??"
She has found a job doing what her supervisor did at the other place, making more money, and they treat her FAR better then the last place.

We also were using her insurance for the kids, and didn't have any for 6 months.
Thank gods the kids didn't get sick/hurt.
Take heart, we were in the same position, and everything worked out fine.

And, your ex husband offered to sleep with you??? Whats up with THAT?

We still don't have much, but if you need some help, PM me.

You don't have to choose, go for it all, whatever comes.

Though right at first it's more like being numb.

I'm so damn sorry. There are many cheerier things to say that are true too, things do work out.

But right now I am sorry and angry and sad for you.

My son went through this last year, I went through it many holiday seasons ago. It was jobs we planned to leave soon, but it was still a shock. It feels like rejection for your good work. And ahead is just uncertainty...with bills still to be paid.

A shock to the system. I'd rock you if I could, you deserve it. (I rock when I hug pretty easily)

Now the true cheerier part...you will get through. You might look back and be glad for it sooner then you think.

It's unbelieveable how unbridled corporatism proceeds to ruin the lives of thousands upon thousands without care. There is no longer a plan, future or present, for the workers of this country.

82. If you can, even if its hard, try to maintain COBRA
For one, you never know what might happen to you. I've easily racked up $30,000 in medical and drug costs since I got laid off from my FT job. I would have been sunk had I not kept COBRA.

Also, if you have any medical issues, most companies will not cover pre-existing conditions for a certain period, like 12 months. However, if you show proof of ongoing coverage, often they will waive that waiting period.

90. Sorry.
We've been through it so many times. 1984. 1987. 1992, the day my hubby returned from our HONEYMOON! I had moved to be with him so I also had no job. What a way to start a marriage. Still together almost 14 years later. 1995. 1999, the day my hubby returned from our vacation to England. He says he no longer goes on trips with me since that seems to be a layoff trigger! 2000. Both of us in 2002. 2003.

We have certainly learned to roll with the punches with this track record. Keep your chin up. Life seems to have cycles and everyone has downtimes. I know that's not much comfort when you are in the middle of it all, but hang in. You have more inner strength than you know.

Now, go right on over to the Unemployment office and sign up for your benefits. Don't wait...'cause there's a waiting period that only begins when you sign up, NOT as of the day you're laid off.

"Laid Off" - I HATE that phrase. Laid off is what companies used to say when they had to Temporarily let folks go because business was bad and they'd rehire them as soon as things picked up.

You, I, and a couple of million others in this country have been FIRED since BushCo took power. Plain and simple.

I was angry, I was scared, and I didn't think I'd ever find comparable employment in the current economy.

Rather than wallowing in pity and pessimism, I immediately started calling people and getting resumes out. The job search became my fulltime job. I spent hours every day online and on the phone. A few months later and I'm in a better job with better pay and better benefits. Here's hoping the same happens for you. Hang in there and start making calls and getting resumes out. And apply for unemployment as soon as you can, you've paid into it and and you deserve it.

From what you wrote in your OP, it sounds like you have strong credentials for your resume...hopefully you're able to find something soon. 103. I'm very sorry, Viva, not just for the loss of the job, but the timing.
I know what it's like to pour yourself into a job and then get discarded. I had an office position for a company with 9 clients that grew to 120 clients in three years under my workaholic totally devoted management. Then they booted me and brought in some hotshot. Ha ha. The company closed down completely as a failure under his management. That was when I lived in Houston, many years ago.

I can't say I'm better off now, but I won't go into specifics because it's a matter of my line of work being harmed by the bush administration, specifically tort reform. Thank goodness you're in Portland and have choices and can get unemployment insurance. You have a wonderful online personality and attitude, and it won't be long until you're with a new company and kickin' butt again.

133. That is the part that sucks, but you laso can help a lot of people
by being fair, treating them as you want to be treated. You do not get that everywhere.

116. Sending hugs... That just sucks.
My husband was let go last year one week before Christmas, and the day after we had the boss over for our Christmas party... ate our food, drank our wine, knowing that they were laying him off the next day.

I don't think you should bawl or be angry... Just pick yourself up and move on.. tomorrow. Wallow for 24 hours, then wash your face and start over. Take a day off to just feel it all, then wake up tomorrow.. get dressed.. and start looking.

Trust me, from our experience, something much much better is out there for you.

123. A big hug to you Viva_La_Revolution...this is a tough week.
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 12:13 AM by aura
Be as calm as you can be and remember that whenever one door closes, another one opens. Try to still you're mind and not worry. Ask your higher self for inner guidance and it will lead you in the right direction. If you feel down and out, sing a song that makes you happy. It'll soothe you and keep you positive. Stay upbeat and remember that these layoffs are taking place all over the country. It is not a bad reflection on you, so don't blame yourself. That'll be a blow to your self esteem that you can't afford right now.

As soon as you can, try to get another job. Think of the past as a cancelled check, and don't look back. Keep looking forward. That way you'll stay positive.

A big hug to you and lots of love. Good luck on your path to success and freedom.

It's a tough week for me too because it is the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death, and I really loved John Lennon very much. Think of the beauty that was John Lennon and remember the poetic words of his songs, and it'll uplift you.

Hang in there Viva_La_Revolution. And hold fast to your holiday dreams...

Lennon be praised

139. WTF???
My parents lost their business to a fire 2 days ago and are broke, because insurance won't cover such "high liabilities".

What a mess our country is in.

That doesn't sound right, dude. I wouldn't buy that line from my insurance company if it came wrapped in a gold ribbon.

My house caught fire two years ago, and the insurance company tried to hoodwink me with a low ball offer. Then they sent a shady contractor who never bothered showing up. Well I hired an attorney (cost me $2000 and worth every penny), called my adjusters boss to raise hell, had two of my own estimates done by reputable and expensive contractors of MY choice and then negotiated tooth and nail with my insurers. They said they wouldn't give me money to manage the claim myself until it was done, but I balked, they paid up, I managed the claim myself, and now my house looks great.

I would be happy to act as an informatin resource for your parents if they need help collecting on their claim from their insurance company(NO charge). My fire was very stressful and I couldn't have gotten through it without Valium. The insurers WILL and MUST by law pay up, but it is up to consumers to keep them honest. Most people don't, they don't fight because they think they have no rights, but they DO have rights and it is easier then you think to make the insurance companys pay. Take my word for it. I held their feet to the fire and they soon cried UNCLE!!!

138. You should be
filing for unemployment.

At least you got severance pay. I got fired two weeks before my 40th b-day and got nothing but my vacation pay. Still, it was nice. Being on unemployment was like having a paid vacation for once in my life. Of course, it did not pay that well, but I still bought a DVD player and $350 worth of books. It helps to have savings and be a homeowner, but I was also kinda afraid I would have to take my temp job back, but it was also nice to have that temp job as a safety net.

Best of luck. Hang in there.

online in still in my PJ's. 20 min. and I was done.

I'll be applying with the temp agency (the same one that found me this job) after X-mas. I like to 'try before I buy'.

144. no worries then, eh?
If the temp agency can place you right away, I probably would exhaust my benefits before I went there. Assuming, of course, that you can live on your unemployment checks. That was no problem for me, and, in fact, the job I got to end my unemployment only paid about $50 a week more than unemployment did. Mainly because it was part time, I was making about half of what I made before I got fired.

142. I feel your pain
Unemployed attorney-fell down a flight of stairs and lost my lawfirm job because of it. It has not been easy finding something since but here are some tips.

1. Recognize that some days will be harder than others. Nothing is hopeless and I have found as bad as it seems one day, the next day it all seems better. What has changed in that time? Nothing, except my attitude.

2. When you get frustrated, take a break for awhile. Take a walk, read a book. Do not focus on your problems.

3. Try to fill your time with activities. For a long time after I fell I was in a bad rut. It hurt to walk so it was easy for me to fall into it. I did as little as possible. All that did was make my mood worse! Once I started to do things again, I started to live again.

4. Do not let employment status define you as a person. We live in a consumer driven society and everything is measured in cash. Don't let yourself get down if you have less money for now. Your employment is not your life, the sooner you can seperate the two the better you will feel.

5. Make sure you have somebody you trust and who cares about you that you can complain to once it awhile! Its not healthy to hold it all inside. Let it out every now and then and you will feel better!

Just some tips from an unemployed "expert" May we both have better luck this coming year :)

Keep your chin up!!

#2 - I'm an Aries. No prob. forgetting my troubles for a minute and having fun. :)

#3 - Today I filed online for Unemployment at 6:30 AM, did a little shopping in the afternoon, made dinner for the family again tonight, and gave the rottie a bath. ok there :)

#4 - I have eaten potato soup for a week straight as a child, because that's all there was. I have survived on $13 cash and WIC for food for a week, two adults and an infant. I have washed diapers in the bathtub.
On unemployment and with a little severance pay, I am ok here too. :)

#5 - This thread is my therapy. The replies from everyone make me feel... :loveya:
I have been through this before (different details... same shit) with no support. This time it's different. Thank you DU :)
