Next dirty look I get from some Christian fundie over Christmas gets
laid out!

I am tired of getting the looks.

"Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas."

"I'm sorry, I don't celebrate. I'm Jewish."

And the looks I get are disgraceful. Fucking bigots. I'm waiting for one to start telling me how dare I not celebrate the Christmas. I can't wait.

I love having my religion spit upon by Christians who worship Jeebus (not Jesus, but Jeebus). These fuckers don't understand that if they want to live like Jesus, be what he was. . .

JEWISH!!!

I can't wait. I'm going to fucking deck one of these POS bastards out! I already have the punch lined up!

1. I'm not Jewish
but I don't celebrate x-mas either. I don't bother making a point of it. It's only once a year . which is pain enough.

Hang in there.

2. This year...
...the kids and I are celebrating the Winter Solstice by learning of the celebrations that other cultures have during the same time period. Tmas, Kwanza, Hannakah, whatever else we can dig up. It reinforced that there's something about those four times of the year that ring as common cause for marking the event thru a variety of rituals, most similiar in many ways. Winter and Summer Solstices, Autumn and Spring Equinoxes. Maybe then, if they do decide to celebrate "Christmas", they'll celebrate the ways in which it differs and is unique from the other celebrations, rather than just the commonality of crass commercialism and guady displays.

3. Do what my mom does...
...say; "thank-you and you have a very Happy Chanukah!" It always shuts them up! I sometimes say that or "have a Merry Soltice...you took our tree, why not our blessings?" That really confuses them!

7. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I don't use them often anymore. As much as I believe in freedom, I also know that saying something like that (either phrase) can get me shot (with a gun) in this state (especially in a small town). The best I could expect is being followed or a cross burned in my lawn. I hate that I have to be silent sometimes, but, I do have a partner and pets to consider...if it was just me, my mouth would know very few limits (I usually don't say things like that in front of children)....the worst they could do to me is kill me (and I would haunt them).

4. I think only the nut cases are doing this. For years----
people have been saying happy holidays or Christmas and no one was up Set over it. It just took in every one. The Bible crack pots are worried about some thing in their own so called minds. I do not think good people who go to church are like these nuts at all. Why they are pushing they are picked on is just beyond me but it is often used to get people up set and band together to do some evil.

6. That's the problem with Fundies
They only know the little tidbits of hate rhetoric spoon fed to them. They don't know any real knowledge of the Bible, of Jesus, or Christianity. That's why they don't remember that Jesus was a Jew, can't stand that other religions exist in America, and want everyone/everything to be under their control. They are not Christians, they are walking, talking hate machines.

9. I am a Christian. But I wish the wackjobs who call themselves
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 06:49 AM by shaniqua6392
Christian would stop this insanity. I wish people a Merry Christmas if I know they are Christian. I wish people a Happy Hanukkah when I know they are Jewish. I give greetings and gifts to my customers according to what they practice. I have atheists in my family and we still celebrate Christmas. They are just celebrating differently. But we still show each other love. I talk to my Jewish customers and ask them about their holiday and what it means to them. They love to explain and I love to learn about everything. I have never had a problem. But, I am also never offended if someone will not say Merry Christmas. The holiday in America means different things to different people. It is no longer just religious. It is a time of year for people of faith and people not with Christian beliefs to give gifts to their loved ones and to gather together in love. I don't think anyone should object to that. A Christian is supposed to be Christ-like. These people running around professing that they are being persecuted are full of crap and I do not find it pleasing in the eyes of God. Christians are not persecuted in this country at all whatsoever! They are being martyrs and God disapproves of those seeking martyrdom in His name. Just my opinion. Excuse the rant.

On edit: Have a blessed Hanukkah SammyBlue!!!!!!

11. Why not just wish them a Happy Hanukkah!
After all, it starts the same day this year. Do people really get worked up over you being Jewish? That's strange!

I guess I've always celebrated the holidays with my Jewish friends without really giving a hoot whether it was Christmas or Hanukkah.

13. You could say, "Have a Cool Yule"
"Yule" seems to be the old secular name for it.

Now, don't you go decking anybody. The real idjits hide behind pulpits. Maybe a nice, rowdy Sunday-go-to-Meetin' protest when the weather gets a little nicer, eh? Maybe re-enact a Biblically Correct stoning (making sure to use styrofoam stones, natch). Or, this winter, start a "Gays for Narnia" campaign.

18. Yule is not secular -
It's the name for the (Celtic/Nordic) pagan festival of the solstice, or in some places at some times celebrated just after (the 24th). It was a feast day in Scandanavia, Gaul, Iceland, etc.

The secular usage of the word "Yule" began as a rip by the Church to overshadow the solstice festival.

Ham is a traditional Christmas dish because of the sacrifice to Freyr.
The burning of the Yule log and the hanging of holly represent the death of the Holly King at the hands of the Oak King.
etc. etc.

Despite the fact that Oxford recognizes "Yule" as an archaic term for Christmas, this is historically and culturally inaccurate.

Just as every unmarried person in history is now said to be gay, every non-Christian cultural word and artifact is now Pagan :P

Okay, Mr/Ms Smartipantix, what do ya call L. Ron Hubbard's birthday? Huh? (It's March 13th.) Hubbardmas? How'ween? (Or would that be spelled "Hamhain"?)

14. A Jewish lady just called into Morning Sedition
she said that at work they put up Christmas stockings for everyone and she felt uncomfortable and took hers down. Later she put it back up cause everyone in the office asked her why she took it down. I know we've even had secret Santas and stuff like that at my work - just talked about this with a young Muslim lady who wears a head scarf in the office and she seemed ok with that too, and we have loads of Hindus here too who have participated in stuff like that before.

I guess I've never considered that it is as sensitive subject. Perhaps we who celebrate Christmas need some sensitivity training on this subject, I wouldn't want to celebrate Christmas at the expense of someone being comfortable at their work place.

Could we have a holiday combining the celebration of lights and giving at work and let it go at that? I don't think any Christian is going to miss all the things that make Christmas special to a Christian. The churches are still open after all!

26. Every Holiday Season my office has a "Multiethnic Celebration"
People bring dishes representing their "heritage"--barbecue, spring rolls, sushi, etc. Some wear "native costume"--saris or cowgirl outfits! Assorted music is played & everyone has fun.

And we add lots of shiny decorations--without specific "religious" meaning.

21. We Joked About This Last Night...
My wife and I constantly laugh at the fundies. I love your line that if you want to be like Jeeebus, you should be a Jew...but being Jewish, I sure don't want those asshats in my synagogue.

Last night I asked a xtian friend a simple question..."did Jesus accept himself as his own personal savior"...and if he didn't, is he in limbo? Speaking of which, where are all those limbo souls going? Another one is how many of these fundies would not accept Jesus in their neighborhood or schools if he returned once they saw that Star of David.

Religion...answering questions that have no answers...and never the right one.

22. Chill, man...
Yeah, it ain't easy when they come after you with that crap, but try not to make the season more stressful than it already is. Gotta be someone around you can hang with to help deal with this.

Maybe I'm spoiled by growing up in NYC and the ingrained multiculural attitudes most of us have, and even in the very conservative church I went to as a kid we insisted on respect for everyone's beliefs. Now, as a universalist Quaker, I'm even more appreciative of other beliefs. But, I suppose that attitude is a rarity in a lot of places.

For 5,000 years you've been putting up with this crap, and it does get old, and occasionally very dangerous, but it's less than a month to go before this Christmas nonsense should stop. This, too, shall pass.

FWIW, most really devout Christians don't think all that much of Christmas-- it's Easter that's the serious one. Christmas is for kids.

23. Confusion about what to say goes way back
A personal anecdote: In 1968 I took my four kids out for a Christmas Eve lunch. The six-year-old (who is now 43) asked the waitress "Are you Christian?" The waitress was obviously upset by the question, and so was I. The six-year-old, however, had a logical reason for the question: "I wanted to know whether to wish her Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah." The 10-year-old (who is now 47) told her that to be safe she should just say "Happy Holidays." Which she then said to Santa.

We lived in a mixed Christian/Jewish neighborhood and the first question kids asked each other was "Are you Christian or Jewish?" The neighborhood eventually lost its Christian/Jewish flavor, became straight/gay; by the time we moved, three years ago, it had morphed into gay/straight/elderly/Yuppie. And so it goes.

27. You can say that about individuals but
please don't group everyone together saying that. Sounds like you might have a bias against Christians and since you are Jewish you should know what can happen when you start denigrating one particular religion.

28. Alternatively, you could wish them "Happy miracle of Jewish liberation day
and see if they get it.

Actually, if anything I'd say things are looking up. Back in the day when I told people I don't celebrate Christmas, they usually reacted with shock and confusion even after they found out I'm Jewish. These days there seems to be a lot more understanding, for some reason. I'm sorry things aren't improving in your neck of the woods.

But yeah, don't punch anybody.

35. Twilight zone again
How did the fundamentalists manage to get us into this fight? I've been saying Happy Holidays for years, am not a Christian, and have a personal issue against Christmas trees (I don't know what happened, one year, I looked at that dead tree and thought why the fuck am I doing this?) I like the pretty lights and decorations though. I like the idea of mid-winter holidays, when the sun goes away quickly at the end of the day, and rises late in the morning. Makes sense to break the monotony of winter with parties and family celebrations, and gift giving from the heart, no matter if someone is Christian, Jewish, Pagan, Wiccan, or just plain ol' secular.

And how did these people forget that Jesus was Jewish?--I've seen bumper stickers that say "My boss is a Jewish Carpenter" Cute, I get it. So why don't they?
Sorry you're going through this. I think actual Christians understand and respect your feelings and beliefs and (my personal opinion) honor the ancient wisdom of Judaism--The very root-- Mother if you will, of the Christian religion.
