25. their official stance is they buy from many distributors
(e.g., Arco, BP, others) in order to "ensure the savings for its customers")

So, wholesale price drives source.

Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 02:15 PM by catabryna
Our one store here in Austin sells a lot of gasoline! Getting Citgo gasoline tends to be difficult due to location but, shopping Costco is a regular thing for me so it works well into my plans. I really have to go out of my way to find a 7-11.

I will change the poll.

Just remember that Conoco has 1 less vote, and Citgo/7-11 has 1 more.

I hope I finally got this right.

for each since in different parts of the country they are run under these separate names.

8. I've mapped the Citgo stations--none remotely close
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 01:49 PM by hlthe2b
SO, I back my local station owner, who may be one of the few remaining "honest" mechanics. He is a Conoco franchise.

When I do go by one of the 711 that have gas pumps, I'll stop there since they do "serve up" Citgo in Denver, but more and more 711s have taken their pumps out it seems.

19. Hugo Chavez via CITGO has a fuel-for-the-poor program.
The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

22. Snopes has done an interesting piece on this...
While the trends favor Citgo, Conoco, BP, Sunoco, all do import some ME oil, though not all from Saudi Arabia. But, as they point out, this can change monthly.
From Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/saudigas.asp

* CITGO is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the national oil company of Venezuela, so naturally most of its crude oil comes from there. However, in February 2002 CITGO also imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 1,342,000 barrels
Kuwait: 437,000 barrels

* Conoco imports primarily from Mexico, Venezuela, and Canada, and not from Middle Eastern countries. However, they are planning to merge with Phillips, which does import from Middle Eastern countries (see below).

* BP imports from a variety of oil-producing countries, but in February 2002 BP North America also imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 470,000 barrels
Kuwait: 415,000 barrels
Saudi Arabia: 2,123,000 barrels
Algeria: 3,853,000 barrels

* Phillips also imports from a variety of oil-producing countries, but in February 2002 Phillips imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 717,000 barrels
Saudi Arabia: 1,100,000 barrels

* Sinclair imports from Canada, not the Middle East.

* Sunoco imports primarily from Canada, Angola, and Nigeria, not Middle Eastern countries.

28. What constitutes a "feel-good" gas station?
Are we saying that oil and gas companies who don't import from the ME are more progressive? What if their proposed alternative to ME oil is drilling for it in ANWR? Were that the case, wouldn't it be environmentally kinder to use ME oil? I don't really know, frankly, my suspicion is that pretty much every oil and gas company is right up there with IG Farben in terms of having all the conscience of a woodchipper. Are there really any oil and gas companies out there who wouldn't commit unspeakable crimes for the sake of their profits?

32. I would like to see discussion on this too... It seems many
want to promote Venezuela as a source because of Chavez' reaching out to our poor and his seemingly populist policies that so annoy the Bushies*.

But, as shown here, even Citgo is importing oil, so what does constitute a "blue" or "politically correct choice" or "feel-good" gas station, as KevinJ asks?

That's certainly a leg up on most oil companies!

31. I voted "other" but I'm not sure whether it's an independent or not.
We have a number of gas stations, mainly in rural Guilford county around Greensboro, who go under the name of Gastown. These tend to be mom-and-pop outfits, pay at the pump is rare - the one I use has pumps with mechanical dials. I go there because it helps support the local business. I don't know where they get their gas from, but they sure have been the cheapest lately.

Mark.

1. I drive a diesel
2. The Citgo that was by me closed and they didn't sell diesel there anyways.
3. The closest place to get diesel is either a Shell if I go one way, or Valero if I go the other.
