U.S. lawmakers accept pay raise, after some had offered to skip it
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/3504606.html

Members of the U.S. House and Senate will get a pay raise after all, boosting their salaries to $165,200 in January.

Some lawmakers, mostly senators who tend to be wealthier than their House colleagues, had eagerly showcased their willingness to freeze their own salaries to help pay for hurricanes and the war in Iraq.

But they've quietly accepted the $3,100 pay raise after it was approved by a closed-door House-Senate conference committee meeting,
then approved by both chambers before President Bush signed it into law last week.

Lawmakers were squeamish about discussing the subject, but congressional aides — speaking on condition that their names be withheld — said House Republican leaders had pushed for the pay raise in the conference committee.

1. Hmmm
being a conference committee, did the full house and senate have to vote on this? I'd like to know how my conman voted.

2. Should I be surprised? Funny, but I am and I know I shouldn't be.

3. They should receive the median annual income for their districts.
And Senators, for their State. That would make them a little more aware of how the f_ing economy is doing.

4. given the percentage of Congressmen and Senators who are . . .
millionaires, you'd think they could live without a $3,100 raise . . . particularly when they have this ridiculous retirement plan that will pay them generously until they die . . . and that they don't have to contribute anything to . . .
