7. Would Weicker run as a Republican, and vote for Frist as majority leader?
I love Weicker, but I'd vote for the candidate who would vote for Reid for Senate leader, in case it meant a Dem majority, and Dem leadership, committee chairmanships, and investigative power.

I wonder if the GOP will send moveon.org a nice thank you card with a picture of their leader with Sen. Whoever R-Conn standing with him after a 51 to 49 vote.

16. And if frogs' asses didn't leak the swamp wouldn't stink?
"They don't ask if you live there, do they?"
But since only people who live there can actually vote, I wonder what out-of-staters are doing, besides pointing up their own mendacity.

22. You know, I generally take a dim view of trying to de-seat Lieberman...
... because the danger is we'll get a "moderate" Republican who will vote for Republican leadership and all the party-line issues instead of Joe who pisses us all off over the war but otherwise pretty much votes party-line. I also tend to think that a lot of the Lieberman-hatred is a little unnecessary. Every party has its lone wolves and Lieberman - such a lone wolf - is no more a Republican than Chuck Hagel is a Democrat. Plus, he's increasingly irrelevant, ignored by all Democrats and with no influence at all on Democratic Iraq policy.

But in spite of all of that, if I were a Connecticut resident and Weicker were to run as an independent (caucusing with the Democrats), I'd easily vote for him over Lieberman.

23. For those of you too young to remember, Weicker was one of
the good guys...one of the last "decent" republicans. The race against him was nasty. Lieberman exploited the "Cuban issue" because Weicker was trying to get the US into a sane Cuban policy. Lieberman got lots of money from the Cuban "exiles" (from Florida no less) to unseat Weicker because, after all, we hate Castro.

It was sad. When Gore was running for prez, he came out with a list of 5 possible VP candidates, those of us who have hated Lieberman for not only beating Weicker but the way he beat Weicker said "we can live with any of them except Joe." We thought Joe was only on the list to make Gore seem reasonable (to consider even nut cases like Lieberman.)

I tell you, this war in Iraq is seen differently by some Jewish people. I think Joe is one of them. If you don't believe me, read "Charlie Wilson's War" about the Russian Afganistan war and the US/CIA involvment in it. A big part of it (us in Afganistan and Iraq) is for the protection of Israel. Now, I have NO objection to that but I would like for it to be above board so that we could have an honest discussion about it.

I'd vote for Weicker in a heart beat. He was really making some headway in our fat fisted stupid policy with Cuba.

him for Defense Sec. That is one of the funniest things I've read. Although rummy is a clown, Joe addressing the military would be twilight zone material.

Lowell P. Weicker, graduate of Yale University and Virginia Law, was a United States Congressman and Senator from Connecticut.
He first gained national recognition for berating members of his own Republican party while serving on the Congressional investigation of Watergate
. After losing his seat in 1988, he successfully ran for Governor of Connecticut as an independent.
He has been the recipient of the Wayne Morse Political Integrity Award (1988)
and the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award (1992).

A major opponent of prayer in schools, Weicker has always had a reverential attitude for the founding fathers of the Constitution and their stance on the separation of church and state. He pointed out, "All you have to do is look at Bosnia and Northern Ireland -- and that's what happens when you mix religion and politics."

In many articles over the years, he has pointed out that if the founding fathers had not acted against their own self interest, we would still live in a nation ruled by twenty tobacco planters and five New England merchants. "It's sad how few people nowadays you can find who are willing to act against their own self interest. That's what we need right now."

He currently resides in Alexandria,Va. and teaches two classes here at U.Va.: a Constitutional Law class at the Law School and a University Seminar called, "Politics: a High or Low Calling." Weicker's class is designed to encourage students that they can make a career in government and still hold on to their integrity.

30. I'll make a bet if Weicker ran in a Dem primary against Lieberman
he could win. Why? Progressives and anti-war Dems would be out in force to defeat Lieberman--and they make a big part of the turnout in a Democratic primary. Lieberman's big hurdle, I think, would be actually winning renomination.
