BREAKING: FORD agreed to pull support for GLBT events
The company lied that they had not agreed to anything with the American Family Association. I can't provide a link to the story because it is subscription, but Aravosis has details at:

http://www.americablog.org

This means that Ford not only lied to the GLBT community about not making an agreement with the AFA, but to the entire public as well.
This would be the time to call dealers and let them know how you feel about this travesty, and the company itself.

1. What kind of liberal buys Ford anyway?
American-made cars, with the exception of Saturn, are horrible. Inefficient, polluting, unreliable junk. I doubt the GLBT community was that into Ford to begin with.

4. I love my Ford Focus that I bought in the spring
I always buy Fords, and I'm a liberal. It's a Detroit, thing, I guess, and I do get X plans from my uncle, who is a retiree. My grandpa was a Ford engineer for years.

5. Noted.
I can understand that. Personally, I'm a Japanese car person, but I'd buy anything before buying American...my experience with American cars is that they are just horrible.

7. Absolutely. . .
And there is nothing wrong with that - people love their cars or brands because they work well, get a good price, and just prefer the comfort.

I think in this case there are still ways to be supportive. You can always contact the dealer and tell him/her that you are uncomfortable bringing the car in for service because several dealers lobbied Ford to meet with a known hate organization and negotiate an agreement to pull support from a segment of the American population market.

Dealers make a lot of money on service - and you can ask for alternative places which don't contract with hate organizations.

2. We need a permanent and irrevocable boycott of Ford.
This should be the final straw.

And why is it that The AFA doesn't give a shit about jobs going overseas, children going hungry, global warming and pollution... but when Ford places ads in a gay newspaper, they get all worked-up into a homophobic lather of bigotry?

Ford doesn't deserve to do business with any progressive ANYWHERE even if they become the sole sponsor of The Gay Games and have a gay film festival in their CEO's mansion.

What good is it if Ford advertises in gay magazines if they're also giving all our money to anti-environment, anti-worker, anti-woman, anti-gay Republicans anyway?

What good is it if Ford supports the gay community if they're also pursuing policies that unnecessarily poison the air we breathe and melt the icecaps anyway? "Thanks to Ford, Gay Pride was nice this year-- too bad that the Ross Ice Shelf chose that day to break away."

Fuck Ford Motors forever-- no matter WHAT they do!

6. Would a Ford boycott work?
Forget the collective action problem--we all know how well the Coors boycott came together.

But bottles of beer are a much lower-cost, higher-volume product. With many other competitors available at the same price. So a boycott of a beer product is easy to accomplish and dramatic in its effect.

Would a car boycott be as effective?
