Check this out : Burt Bacharach's new political song

But even as its music rings like a pristine bell chime from the cathedral of classic pop, the lyrics to “Who Are These People,” a showcase for longtime Bacharach admirer and collaborator Costello, could hardly be more pointed—and angry: “This stupid mess we’re in just keeps getting worse/ So many people dying needlessly/ Looks like the liars will inherit the earth/ Even pretending to pray…”

1. He's so cool
Yeah, he's old - who isn't? - but this guy has written some marvelous songs. Then, his album with Elvis Costello just fixed him firmly in my mind as a real damn fine musician.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be picking this one up.

4. Another small bit about the song...
"I had to express myself, not only musically but lyrically. It was time for me to ask, 'who are these people who are taking control of our lives and how do we stop the violence?' I've got two little kids and a 19-year-old son and I wonder what they're going to do with their lives. It's so personal to me that I even decided to do some of the singing. This is dedicated to my kids and your kids," Bacharach adds.

Collaborations on At This Time include Elvis Costello, with whom Bacharach teamed on the Grammy-winning album, "Painted From Memory" in 1998. Costello performs "Who Are These People," perhaps the CD's most-controversial and haunting track, with music by Bacharach and lyrics by Bacharach and Tonio K. "Who are these people that keep telling us lies?/And how did these people get control of our lives?/And who'll stop the violence 'cause it's out of control/Make 'em stop," Costello sings.

5. Bacharach is something.....
The other day I was driving to work and this schmaltzy record from the 60's
came on the radio that, for all it's schmaltziness, struck me as a remarkably
well written song. Out of curiosity, I looked it up on the internet: and early
Bacharach hit called "Blue On Blue".
