UK Times: Republicans sinking in sleaze

Republicans sinking in sleaze

By Tim Reid
12-10-05

A DECADE ago Newt Gingrich’s Republican revolutionaries seized control of Congress after 40 years of Democrat rule by promising to end the culture of graft and corruption on Capitol Hill.

Today, after a string of indictments, scandals and a criminal investigation that threatens to implicate dozens of politicians next year, the tables have turned full circle. It is now President Bush’s Republicans who are seen as the party of sleaze.

Polls suggest that two thirds of Americans believe that corruption is a serious political problem. That, allied with the growing unpopularity of the war in Iraq, is raising fears in the White House of a voter backlash in next year’s mid-term congressional elections.

Since the summer, leading Republicans have been hit by a steady stream of scandals.

(A good, concise synopsis of the current characters in the exposed scandals to date.)

1. I wish the UK Times would get it straight what role Reid played.
Yes, he received funds. No, it did not influence his vote. He was obligated to vote as he did, anyway, because of his constituency. If he had voted otherwise and said vote being in concert with Abramoff's goals, then yes there would be influence. But what Abramoff wanted and what Reid did dovetailed, whether Abramoff gave funds or not.

As for Landrieu, I don't know her story.

2. hmmm....the Times said "40 years of Democrat rule"?
not "Democratic" or rule by the Democratic Party? I'm sorry to learn that the radical right's slur has crossed the Atlantic. I'll never again refer to ANY Repuke as anything but a Repuke, and I think the Times should do likewise.

3. In British politics, 'Democrat' is used as an adjective
eg "Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, today called for ..." on their own website (http://www.libdems.org.uk/news/news.html?id=ViewAll&navPage=news.html). Don't read anything into it. It's not a slur here.

4. Many thanks. I'm too defensive, I suppose
one forgets the charming differences in English at one's peril. I do know that "knock you up" in American English means something quite different from how it's used England. :pals:
