Poll question: What's your favorite level of government?
On the eve of my 500th post, I'd like to ask DUers to take a moment to forget the scandals and corruption and greed and EVIL and tell me what aspect of the US government gives you HOPE. Is it a city council meeting dragging on into the night, where the local community really hashes things out? Is it the desk at the county department of human assistance where someone is hooking up motel vouchers for evicted families? Or is it the dream of a big future federal program, like the Peace Corps or the WPA, that might sweepingly solve a lot of problems at once? Where does your hope, if any, in the system lie?

7. He's doing a great job.
He wants everyone to travel by public transportation. The problem is that public transportation is even slower than the freeways. The trains are great, but they only take you to a few areas. The busses are far worse than cars in terms of travel time. They use the same roads as the cars, but because the busses make so many stops, they take forever to get anywhere. They are mostly good for retired people and people who can't afford anything else. It is a real shame that public transportation in LA is so bad. I hope Villaraigosa will find a good way to improve public transpotation. It is a drag having to drive everywhere all time.

10. Driving in LA is no picnic!
I actually like the town a lot better being there with no car. The Rapid is a pretty good way to get from Hollywood or Koreatown (where a lot of my friends live) down to Venice to hang out on the beach. With a job, though, I guess it's a different story, you really would need a car. I lived in OC with no car for a year when I was 17--talk about BAD buses!

6. Mendocino's definitely done some good things
Haven't heard so much from Humboldt lately, but I think you're in the same boat... I look forward to more independent thinking from far northwest California!

5. I would love to see
a WPA-like program.

As for a favorite level of government... where I am is pretty rotten from top to bottom; however, I don't think its hopeless.

9. As Local as possible
For the most part. Most progressive goals, when viewed by socialists, require a strong top-down enforcement, such that no players 'race to the bottom'. Conversely, when viewed by mutualists & georgists, they can be implemented at lower levels, at least when there is no interference from above.
