Having looked at a few freeper posts;
And been amazed about what they post and believe, I may have found a reason for their hatred; they can't help themselves:

Should bias be treated as a mental illness?
Patients paralyzed by racism, other prejudices confound therapists

By Shankar Vedantam
The Washington Post
Updated: 3:33 a.m. ET Dec. 10, 2005

The 48-year-old man turned down a job because he feared that a co-worker would be gay. He was upset that gay culture was becoming mainstream and blamed most of his personal, professional and emotional problems on the gay and lesbian movement.

These fixations preoccupied him every day. Articles in magazines about gays made him agitated. He confessed that his fears had left him socially isolated and unemployed for years: A recovering alcoholic, the man even avoided 12-step meetings out of fear he might encounter a gay person.

The article goes on to describe one man's obsession with blacks and how, as a waiter, he flings plates of food at black patrons. From what I've seen at freeper posts,

1. What else can one attribute it to...
...when people who blow up abortion clinics are convinced that Jesus told them to?

Or when there's an entire movement afoot to overthrow an established democracy so they can stone gay people to death in the streets as a "community project"... also in the name of Jesus.

The term, I believe, is folie en masse.

In any case, it's a good reason to put all the deranged lunatics somewhere where they can't hurt the rest of us. I hear Pitcairn Island is pretty empty right now.

10. I did consider Antarctica for a split second...
...but then I realized that we don't need to speed up the melting of the ice caps by relocating all those hot gasbags down there.

Besides, the southern hemisphere has more than its share of right-wing fascists. How about we cede the continental U.S. to the crazies, and take over Australia as our own? The gay-only beaches alone would be worth it! :D

11. Psssssst, don't tell anybody else on DU I said this...
...but I am totally convinced that the God-Warrior Lady is not as stark an anomaly as we'd like to think she is.

"Quakerfriend" -- what a lovely username. I've known for decades that if I were to ever join another Christian church for any reason, the Society of Friends would be the one. :)

8. What they fear above all is free thinking: Their own free thinking.
And so, when they encounter anyone who does it, it threatens their own sense of security through the larger group. If I have security all by myself, then why don't they?

They're lemmings. They can't be cured, or reasoned with, just kept out of power.

13. Should bias be treated as a mental illness?
:sarcasm: Definitely! He should be locked up in a mental institution and given massive doses of thorazine. Wrist/ankle restraints would probably help too.

14. Unhealthy obsessions.
These fixations preoccupied him every day.

This was the sentence that I noticed. It seems as if the most extreme right-wing nutjobs are obsessed with certain specific things, all having to do with sex, pregnancy, and childbirth.

Abortion. Gay sex. Abstinence education. They are absolutely fixated on these topics and only these. They are unable to see a moral dimension in, say, Bush's Iraq War, yet they worry day and night about gay people having sex. (I'm the opposite.)

Remember the uproar about Bill & Monica? More sex obsession. What is wrong with these people? And why are they in charge, instead of skulking around the margins like they should be?

America must look absolutely insane to our enlightened friends in Europe and elsewhere.
