Bill O'Reilly caller refused to tip waitress because she said Happy
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 01:48 PM by Quixote1818
Holidays!

I caught a few minutes of his show yesterday driving countryside and was literally pounding my head against the steering wheel at the stupidity of the callers and of course Bill O'Dumbfuck himself.

When the guy called in he just completely went off about this waitress having the gumption of telling him to have a Happy Holiday instead of saying Merry Christmas. THAT EVIL SECULAR BITCH!!!! SHE SAID HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND NOT MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! I LEFT THE RESTAURANT AND REFUSED TO TIP HER!!!

Well, those were not his exact words but the guy was definitely nuts! So then Bill O'Reilly riped into the guy and said he was a jerk for not tipping her. O'Reilly said "What if you had been Jewish or Muslim" she didn't know what your religion was. She was just trying to be respectful. Then O'Reilly discovered he had contradicted himself and tried to back petal and explain the difference.

The guy, expecting O'Reilly to praise him was dumbfounded at O'Reilly's reaction.

It was pure poetic justice at it's best! O'Reilly was arguing against his own ideology and completely contradicting everything his show was about.

6. At least we know he DOES get it.
Stores with "Happy Holidays" displays are respectful, just like the server was.

He's just being an asshole for pretending this is an anti-Christian issue. He's shown himself to be a whore for ratings yet again.

87. Isn't he the one who has a nephew in Iraq now?
Could be that having that kind of investment has made inroads into his thick head via his worry for someone he loves being in harms way.

Sure he's still a corporate schill, but if his nephew dies, he could turn on them with this venom and stick that mike so far up the rethug spew machine's rear that they'll hear their own acid indigestion.

I can dream, right?

Just to annoy the fundies.

Besides, TODAY isn't Christmas, so saying "Merry Christmas" is kinda stupid anyway. Like saying "Happy Birthday" a month before someone's birthday.

7. I think he's getting shaky.
After all the backlashes resulting from his lies and the infamous NPR interview and Al Franken's book and the sex scandal and the threats to blow up San Francisco and now the inane "Battle to Save Christmas," O'Reilly seems to be hitting far more hurdles in his "journalistic" career than he planned for, and it's taking its toll. I think he wants to put up a tough-guy front, but inside, he's slipping, getting worn out...This is just more evidence of that: he actually caught himself taking a legitimate, reasoned argument against some asshole non-tipper who had taken O'Reilly's words far too seriously. Bill probably was thinking, "Holy fuck, what have I created here?" when he took that call.

This is good news...look for more cracks in the facades soon; by 2007, he'll retire if this keeps up.

9. The great irony of the so-called "War on Christmas"
Is that it has turned the "Merry Christmas" people into a pack of nasty, black-hearted assholes in a season that is meant for joy, celebration, peace on earth and good will towards all people. They hiss "Merry Christmas" at you through clenched teeth, their faces red with rage - they could only mean the opposite, that you should die and suffer the pains of hell for your secularization of their joyful celebration! They refuse to tip waitresses who don't follow lockstep in their absurd little rituals. They hurl invective, full of bile. They fall ass over teakettle to insult, deride, chastise, inveigh. They pound tables, sneer at salespeople, erupt into rants, devolve into apoplexia. What a mockery they make of their own religion, these dogmatic huffers of good tidings. What a disgrace they make of their own season of joy, with their hateful, enraged disgruntlement.

Before the wingnut pundits like O'Reilly made an issue of it, I mean. They are so easy to brainwash and incite to anger. Frightening really. The fact that a listener of his would be so mean-spirited as to stiff a server because that person said ...what? Something nice to him. What a reprehensible thing to say. Happy Holidays. And makes me want to hate this time of the year too because of how they act. But I know I can't let what someone else does control my life totally like that. And they claim to be more reigious than me as a liberal but are forgetting the second commandment from Jesus: love thy neighbor as thy self.
They're being so selfish and not thinking of anyone but themselves. Saying "happy holiday's" is the polite way of wishing someone joy this time of the year because there are different holiday's going on now from Winter Soltice to Christmas. I guess manners is a 90's thing now??

34. The Merry Christmas thing is just the latest diversion
to keep the masses dumbed down and angry with life, just like Terry Schiavo and missing blondes.

When I was younger I used to argue with people who carry on like that and try to make them feel stupid. I've found a better way (for me at least...) now I just smile gently at them and simply say "You seem to be having a really bad day." That takes the wind right out of their sails. Often you find that whatever they are raging about isn't the real problem, it just gives them something less painful to focus on. Maybe they are out of work and can't pay the bills, or their parents are sick, or their dog died.

76. EXACTLY! Looking for permission to be an asshole
I've read/heard from a couple of sources that fundies are the worst tippers. It's part of their authoritarian world view -- "I, the customer, am your boss. I do not *have* to tip you for doing your job. If you were a righteous, God-fearing person you would feel sufficiently rewarded by being allowed to serve in your humble occupation."

Back in reality, waitresses (and others who collect tips) do not have to be paid minimum wage -- they can be paid as little as $2.45/hr (IIRC) and their tips go towards making up the difference between that and minimum wage. So if that waitress were collecting $4/hr in tips (averaged for the whole shift!) She would be making only a little above minimum wage.

I read *some* of this in Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed", hope I didn't mess up the facts.

89. You got the facts correct
Tipped employees must be paid the minimum wage.

There are three components to a tipped employee's wage:

1. The $2.45 per hour the employer is required to pay
2. Any tips the employee earns--and "tip pooling," the practice of collecting all tips then equally distributing them to the tipped staff, is authorized by law
3. If (1) and (2) do not equal the minimum wage, an additional payment to bring the employee to the minimum wage

110. Wonder if he was a "tract" tipper before this
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 10:21 PM by lolly
Does anyone remember the movement (I think it was about 20 years ago) when the fundies were proud to let everyone know that they refused to give monetary tips, but instead gave something "far more valuable"--a plastic-coated card with Bible verses on it. The card itself had some ghastly poem or something about how everlasting life was more important than a few quarters, and told the receiver in a very patronizing tone that she should be ever-so-greatful that the customer cared enough about her to give her such a wonderful gift instead of a tip.

I first read about it in "Dear Abby" or Anne Landers--readers had been asking how much to tip various people, and someone sent in a copy of this tract to solve all their problems (obviously the guy didn't realize Anne and Abby were Jewish).

Anyway, she raked him over the coals for it, but as I recall, the "tip-tract" kept resurfacing in various letters to editors, etc.

This guy sounds like their spiritual heir.

I never understood that...it has nothing to do with good or bad service,it has to do with being human. I do it not because I feel I am doing the person a favor,I do it because I feel bad if I dont do it.

To brag,as the person did about not leaving a tip, about being a shithead isn't a good quality.

42. Leading vis-a-via Fascism....
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 05:19 PM by Dunvegan
There seems to be in any Western country (i.e., historically Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, et. al.) a certain self-disenfranchised percentage of the population that is ripe in their petulance and underachievement for fascist leaders to show them the way, and hand them the propaganda to feel superior.

I'm talking about the usual phlegmatic underachievers that are ravenous for self-esteem, but far too lazy to earn it.

The vicious gossips that can be turned via phone-trees to informers, and by their Internet posts into propaganda amplifiers.

The penurious that are looking endlessly to justify their naturally miserly inclinations, and equally greedy for unearned handouts.

The racist/sexist/xenophobic/homophobic/religious absolutists who are looking for a manufactured excuse to elevate themselves above "the other."

That's the the point of the current US right-wingnut propaganda/talking points: Fomenting foaming rabid fascist radicals for the use of the Ruling Class.

The wide-spread use of "smart and immoral talking heads" making mint to "rally" this rabid and nasty element into boldness and acting out hasn't been seen since the McCarthy era. Only in the 1950's it was only a few rabble-rousers and one rallying point: Communism.

Now the fascism is an organized, well-funded, broad-based campaign waged by many with much to gain "making-bank-wise"...and with newly minted "hateing points" invented nearly daily.

Willkommen to der "Homeland"...Berlin 1939...USA-style.

I wasn't sure however because of the way he stuttered when O'Reilly jumped on him. He sounded very convincing their. If he is a liberal, I have to give him credit as being one hell of an actor.

The punch her in the face comment was so over the top he did seem to be a liberal making fun of O'Reilly. I would lean toward him being a liberal but who knows.

George Bush New York 1 $465.00 / $3.00 < 1% you cheap fuck
George Bush Huntsville 2 $36.87 / $5.00 13%

Karl Rove Washington D.C. 4 $256.66 / $10.00 3%
Karl Rove Washington DC 4 $312.00 / $12.00 3%

I wonder if O'Reilly realizes he's berating this guy because the guy is doing exactly what he told them to do. I doubt irony is his strong point...

What an arrogant douchebag she was. The majority of her bill was spent on liquor, and the food she did eat was promptly purged. becoming a woman isn't easy, but don't take it out on the waitstaff.

Newt Gingrich McLean, VA 2 $14.00 / $-2.00 -14% read details

That site is kind of fun.

Details: Dave, his wife and his twin daughters stopped by the restaurant I waiter at last spring. Very polite. Kids were well behaved. A great little family and a generous gratuity to boot.

Somehow I'm not surprised. It seems like the good tippers & the bad tippers are pretty much who you'd think it would be. Although Kerry has left a very long list of angry waitresses - 11 complaints! One said that along w/the 2% tip, he added a note to vote for him. Sorry, off-topic. Carry on.

62. O'Reilly may or may not know, but he's staying the course.
Like every one of the right-wing nuts, they maintain they're right, even when they may be wrong.

It was neat to see Howard Stern rip into him. Stern is just as big an egomaniac as O'Reilly. I think in a way, he sees himself as a rival to him. If Stern wasn't so impressed by O'Reilly's audience, and wanted to try to lure them over to the dark side of Sirius, he might have actually ripped several new holes in his head.

be. Yes, showbiz, that's what O'Reilly does, he's certainly not a newsman.

Stern and Limbaugh are the two titans of radio, big enough to be a law unto themselves. That's why Sirius is willing to gamble a huge chunk of change to Stern in the hopes that he will launch their enterprise for them, and, satellite radio as a medium.

90. Are they going to resurrect the War On Christmas *every single year*?
Now Fox hairhead John Gibson has a damn book out on this non-existent "war". If only the RW could get so worked up about the inequities of a real war, like Bush's Iraq War. And who has time to read such a silly book during the Christmas season, or the inclination afterwards?

The religious nuts want to boycott Wal-Mart because they have signs up saying "Happy Holidays". Talk about focusing on trivia! What about Wal-Mart's attitude and actions toward its employees, toward women, toward minorities? What about Wal-Mart's corrosive effect on the communities it invades? Apparently none of that matters. But let them put up a horrible, evil, anti-American, anti-Christian sign reading "Happy Holidays" and the screeching begins.

When I was a kid, I was told it was more polite to say "Happy Holidays" because you couldn't be sure that the stranger (or customer) you are saying it to celebrates Christmas. Made sense then, makes sense now. What am I missing?

91. That is exactly what Bill O'Reilly told the caller.
"The little waitress comes up to you and says
“Happy Holidays.” She doesn’t know whether you’re Jewish, whether you’re a Muslim, whether you’re a Buddhist or anything. So why would you be, why would you be offended by that?"

Contradicting his statement on November 30 on Neil Cacuto's show:
"Then the business community says we don’t want to offend anybody, so we’re not going to say “Merry Christmas.” We’re going to say “Happy Holidays, all right? That offends millions of Christians, see? Eighty-five percent of the country calls itself Christian."

5) Other blogs like SpeakSpeak (which I write for) learning about the audio

The big question:

Will "Media Matters for America" pick up on it?

If so, it will get even wider attention, and people will question if O'Reilly himself believes what he says about a "War on Christmas."

99. How the hell does saying Happy Holidays "offend" Christians?
Who could possibly construe such a friendly winter greeting as "offensive"? The Christians who would be offended by such niceness are the ones giving the rest of us a bad name.

Maybe those Christians should accept the greetings in the spirit in which they are given and start focusing on the things that really matter. War on Christmas? How about the war in Iraq?

I'm not "doing" christmas this year. I have finally come to the realization that it is insane for me to celebrate a holy day for a religion in which I do not believe.

Makes me wonder just how many people continue the knee jerk celebration because of childhood memories.

It doesn't help that the commercialization has gotten so out of control I want to scream. By the time the first of december arrives I'm sick of it already.

104. Transcript
of some of the conversation:

From Bill O’Reilly’s “The Radio Factor” of December 10, 2005:

Caller Kevin in Los Angeles: I had a very good meal, and the service was very good, etc. and then the waitress came up at the end and…gave me the check and she says “Happy Holidays” and I swear to God…I thought..”what kind of American is this?” and I gave her no tip…

O’Reilly: But why though? Why, I mean, whoa…hold on. The little waitress comes up to you and says “Happy Holidays.” She doesn’t know whether you’re Jewish, whether you’re a Muslim, whether you’re a Buddhist or anything. So why would you be, why would you be offended by that?

Kevin: …I wanted to punch her in the face..when you go into these stores, y’know, where they don’t say…they don’t know, either whether you’re Jewish or not or anything else.

O’Reilly then realized that the caller is probably a liberal who had successfully set him up to flip-flop.
